Geraniums and petunias have done well for me in my front yard. It faces west so it receives the afternoon and evening sun.

Vinca, hands down, no question, no contest.

The love the sun, can handle drought (they'll shrivel up when they need water... throw some on and they'll bounce right back) and never need deadheading. It's what I use in my big beds. I just picked up over 200 of them this weekend and now comes the worst part of them... the planting (although that comes with every flower! )

Geraniums are all we plant. We do have tulips from Holland that are awesome when they bloom each year.

I second vincas. They are the most drought tolerant and easiest of any flower I have ever grown. And the hotter it gets the more they grow. Begonias do well to although they prefer not quite as much sun as say the vincas.

Here are some pics of vincas. Make sure they get plenty of sun. You will be amazed as when the humidity goes up they shoot up seemingly overnight.
Most big box stores around sell them.

Lowes has them... I picked them up this past weekend. They were outside the garden center on carts, not inside on the tables.
