Default I need me a little 1950s brick ranch...but it has to be in Norfolk. Any ideas?

For work-related reasons, I have to remain in Norfolk, but I'm hoping to find a nice brick ranch (1950s or early 1960s) in Norfolk. Neighborhood is EVERYTHING.

I want a house that's about 1800-2200 square feet, well built (nothing flimsy) and in a really nice area. I live in an area now with a lot of walk-by traffic and I want to live in a quiet little enclave somewhere.

It doesn't have to be a brick ranch, but my hubby and I are well into our 50s, and we want something that's easy to maintain and easy on the wallet, too.

Any recommendations? Thus far, the only neighborhood I've found on my own is Meadowbrook (off Military Highway). Surely Norfolk has more than one neighborhood with quiet streets and well-maintained yards and pretty ranches? Price range is up to $300,000 (but $275,000 would be better).

We rent in Camellia Gardens/Acres, and it's almost entirely 1950's ranchers. Well below your price range, so it might not be the kind of neighborhood you are looking for. We love the neighbors, and it's very quiet and peaceful here.

Well, we sold the old house and bought a new one, and it's a dandy brick ranch with a two car garage! It's a one-owner, custom-built brick ranch, and we bought it from first owner's estate.

He kept this place in perfect condition, and there's not a single mark on the 49-year-old formica countertops in the kitchen and baths.

Walking in the front door is just like stepping into 1962. I LOVE IT.

And it's on a dead-end street (near the airport). Turns out, Norfolk does have a few nice neighborhoods.

My favorite room is the den!

And my other favorite room is the pink bathroom:

With a pink tub!

And an original kitchen.

And a sunporch:

And we're all moved in.

The house really looks to be in great shape from the photos you have there. Are you going to update anything or enjoy it as is?

Updating is a DIRTY word in my book. I'm an architectural historian and I purchased *this* house because walking in the front door is like stepping back into 1962 and I LOVE IT!!!

The house was beautifully maintained and I intend to carry on that tradition.

I really do think all this "updating" business is a travesty. As a baby boomer who grew up in the1960s, I don't remember that my parents or my friends' parents ever "remodeled" a kitchen. If i were queen of the world (and it shouldn't be long now), I'd do television shows where crappy "modernistic" chrome and granite kitchens are restored to their 1940s, 50s or 60s grandeur!
