My girlfriend and I are looking to relocate to this Hampton/Norfolk area from Columbus, OH. We enjoy an active nightlife, frequenting concerts and festivals whenever possible. We don't mind a commute for this stuff (20 minutes or so is totally fine).

We aren't exactly rolling the cash but we're not completely poor.. ish. hah. Looking for an apartment somewhere decent. Basically, anywhere not ghetto. Been there, done that, and wont go back to the thumping cars at all hours and feeling nervous to walk around the complex. Not looking at any specific area, though closer to water, the better. If you can guess some rough numbers or just decent apartments, anything will help! Looking for studio/1br apt.

My girlfriend is working towards her dive cert. and is seeking to get some sort of water related job if anyone has any info on that?

Thanks!

one note- commutes here are generally at least twenty minutes and I bet average 30 to 45 without a traffic incident. You may need to reset your idea of average commute

Nice apartmetns can be found in lots of places for a variety of price levels, not sure what you consider decent prices but a 1BR/studio aorund the water in a decent area should be around 800 to a 1000/ month. Not a fancy place but basic in an area that you should feel safe but still need to be cognizant of where you are. After that it jumps to a variety of price levels depending on amenities and location

Hampton and Norfolk are very different cities. The former is on the north side of the peninsula while the latter is on the south side. If you want an active night life live in Norfolk and even then, that's a bit of a stretch. Most of the night life here is is just bars and clubs. If that's what you're into, then Norfolk is good for that and the north side has its fair share too. I believe Middy's is located in Newport News.

If you want to live somewhere cheap in Norfolk, try Ocean View. Be warned, it's not in the best of areas though, but it's right near the water.

What do you do for a living?

To be honest, your girlfriend will not have much luck with water based jobs here. Although there are some like fishing boats, a couple of dive charters, para sail, etc. it's all VERY seasonal.

I worry that the winter months could take a major toll on you both.

I think you're better off looking at FL, HI or CA.
