Are they any good charities in the Newport News/York County area that will come to your house and pick up donated appliances and furniture?

You should be able to get a scheduled pick up through CHKD, Family THrift, or DAV (Disabled American Vets). They always leave me flyers and bags with info for pick ups or to schedule picks up for larger items. If they wont take your appliances, check Craigslist or Freecycle for your area. Many people will come pick up the appliances for free since they then take them to the scrapyards and sell them as bulk metal.

Habitat for Humanity also runs a building materials "thrift store" and they pick up and are great! I use them all the time -- and ANYONE can shop at their store on Warwick Blvd in the Hilton Shopping Center.
