I just recently moved to the area and I have a few questions about the car registration.

1. What is the general process I should follow to get this done correctly.
2. Will I need to get the car reinspected because my car is current until 2012.
3. I know about the wonderful property tax How much of that will I have to pay?
4. Do I need the insurance transferred over before I goto the DMV?

Man, it's the Commonwealth. Get used to it.

Where did you move from?

Most likely, you'll have to get the car reinspected. VA requires an inspection sticker on the windshield. There's usually a grace period to get this taken care of.

You should be able to keep your current car insurance provider.

Property tax and taxes in general, is pretty high in VA.

Once you get VA Plates, you will need VA Inspection done. The inspection is very cheap and easy to get. Take all your car paperwork to the DMV and tell them you're now a VA resident and need tags and a VA driver's license.

We're from TX too. I think the VA laws give you thirty days to get everything changed over. Unfortunately, our TX inspection stickers didn't mean diddly-squat up here. As to the insurance, we had to provide proof of insurance to DMV when we got our licenses and VA registration.
