Possibly moving to Newport News area
I may be relocating to the Newport News area within the next couple of months for a new job. I am looking for information on what cities/areas/neighborhoods are good places to live with a family and day care recommendations/an idea of what day care rates are like in the area. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

If you have school aged children, you may want to consider the Tabb or Grafton areas of York County. The schools are better then in Newport News or Hampton. Are you looking to buy or rent? I am sorry but I don't know much about day care in this area but there are plenty of child car centers around here. . If you have particular questions, I would be happy to try to answer them.

I've been living in Newport News for 7 years and absolutely hate it. The school systems here are not the best at all so if you have kids and are looking at schools, (my daughter is 2 but we're already planning ahead) I'd look into going private if in Newport News. York County has decent public schools. We live in a nice neighborhood in Newport News (average house around $180,000) and we're zoned for one of the WORST schools in NN. We already decided our children are going to school, if we're still here. We're planning on moving in about 3 years.
For daycare, we have an inhome daycare provider who we love. I knew her from someone I worked with as well as my nephew goes there. She charges $85 a week but that's a steal. I think others are around $125 a week. Here is a web site I'd check out to find out everything you want to know about licensed daycare providers in the area. They have inhome and centers on this web site:
Licensed Child Care - Virginia Department of Social Services
As far as neighborhoods, Denbigh is getting really crowded. The Hidenwood area is nice. Just check to see what schools you'd be zoned for if you plan on sending kids to public school...and then check out the city of Newport News's web site for school info.
Good luck with your move!

The Kiln Creek area in Newport News/ York County is very popular. It has everything from condos to large single family homes. York County is more popular because of the school system. If you like more of a small town feel there is also Poquoson (Which also has excellent schools).
I use an in home daycare provider. She charges $100/week, which I think is low for the average. If you go to one of the big day care providers I believe it is at least $150/week, but don't quote me on that.
If you are doing online househunting and have any questions about different neighborhoods, feel free to contact me.

i agree with tabb/grafton. even though i think there are a select no. of decent schools in Hampton and Newport News, York Co. schools are probably the best school district in Hampton Roads. Menchville is a very popular family area of NN which has decent public schools. I'd also look at Yorkshire Downs and the Gables in York Co which are in the the very good Tabb district.

I do have one school-aged child, so schools are a big consideration. What are the schools in the surrounding areas (other than York County) like? And what are the commute times for the surrounding areas? Do commute times make living in Williamsburg, Norfolk, etc unreasonable?
We'll probably rent to start out until we get a feel for the area. Optimally, we'd like to find a single-family home, pet friendly, good schools and neighborhood, at least 3BR, for $1000 or less. Does such a thing exist in this area?
Additionally - what are utility costs like in NN and the surrounding areas?
Thanks again for all of the help!

Williamsburg is a good choice, but not Norfolk.
