Moving
Hello,
My family is moving to the VB area due to my husbands job. We are looking for an area on the beach that is safe. We are not entirely used to unsafe however coming from the DC Northern Virginia area. We have looked some on the peninsula and cannot seem to find where everything is?? We are used to area that have Target's, malls, etc. and I have not found that on the peninsula....have I missed it? We really want to live on the ocean and would love suggestions.

If you are looking on the peninsula the best place to be would be the Denbigh/Oyster Point Area of Newport News or Tabb area of York County. The largest neighborhood in this area is Kiln Creek, however there are several smaller, nice neighborhoods in York County too. You have Patrick Henry Mall (it's not the greatest, but you have all the basics Macy's, Dillards, Penney's- it's not a far drive to the outlets in Williamsburg, or Macarthur Center in Norfolk - sometimes I'll also make the trip to Richmond for some shopping too), Target, Traders Joe's, lowe's/Home Depot, Walmart, Sam's Club, tons of resturants and more all along Jefferson Ave. There is also the new Newport News City Center with shops and restuarants as well as Port Warwick all in the vicinity. All very convienent.
If you are looking on the southside, you might look into the lynnhaven area of va beach or greenbriar area of chesapeake.
Hope this helps.

If you are able to afford it, York County and Newport News both offer abundant waterfront properties because they both lie along rivers. Almost all of the riverfront areas of Newport News are safe and affluent neighborhoods (i.e. Beverly Hills, James Landing, Hilton Village, Riverside, and Merry Point are some) while York County is very safe and also affluent in general. Like rmboyle said, the Peninsula does have all the basic chains you'd be looking for, mostly all concentrated along Jefferson Avenue in Newport News.

If you are moving to the VB area, why are you looking on the Hampton side of the tunnel? Traffic / commute through the tunnel can be difficult.
there are many targets and shopping areas in Va. Beach. One on Princess Anne Road and one on First Colonial Road, Hilltop Area. Hilltop is close to the beach and the bay and is a pretty nice area.

spent the weekend driving everywhere!
Well, we spent days driving the different areas and here is what I have found for our family. We liked Virginia Beach the best even though a commute for my husband from NE Suffolk may be long. We really liked the grand neck Lynnhaven Colony aread the best and will continue to look there.

Good for you!! I live in Virginia Beach, so I completely understand : )
Do you mean the Great Neck area? That is a nice area, and schools are well rated with greatschools.net Did you get a chance to ride out towards the Princess Anne area, by the courthouse, down General Booth, etc? I like it as it has some of the nice area like Great Neck, but a little "out of the congestion". both areas are very sought after.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them.
