Hi all,

I am a soon to graduate college student. I applied to work in the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. I don't live in Virginia, so I am wondering if anyone knows what the environment is like around the shipyard? Google review had all but good things to say about it, but I want to see if someone can give a little more details.

Thanks!

Well, there are things happening around the shipyard as far as a new bridge being built. Not many people who work in the shipyard actually live near the shipyard. Hampton Roads is unique as all the cities blend into each other with those across the water being joined by a tunnel or bridge. Chesapeake is a nice area to live and reasonable. I know many who live in Virginia Beach, Suffolk and Chesapeake who work at the yard, so you really have a choice.

It's a gritty industrial area with relatively low income residences in the surrounding neighborhoods in one of the poorest if not the poorest cities in the region. Not far away are better areas and in downtown Portsmouth there are some pleasant places.

Most of the folks working at the yard live in one of the surrounding cities, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Virginia Beach and the other cities in the region. There are nice areas in all of these cities and depending on your income and tastes most all lifestyles are available.

Thanks for the info. If I were to live by myself, and I don't need to live in the nicest apartment, but preferably a safer neighborhood so I don't have to worry about getting robbed, how much should I expect my rent to be?

Hey,

I am a recent college grad myself and recently accepted a job offer with NNSY. Are you in the February class?

I don't work at the Norfolk ship yard, but I do work in the Newport News ship yard which is just 15 mins away. Congrats on your job, there is plenty of potential. I would recommend visiting the area before commiting to where you live. This whole metropolitan (Hampton Roads) area has lots of hood areas. I would recommend living in the Ghent area of Norfolk, which is prob the nicest area in the whole HR area, and it isn't far from Norfolk Naval.

They've cleaned up quite abit since then LOL. I remember the old Norshipco and it was the pits to be in a drydock and have to walk it everyday to the ship. It was literally a gravel pit when it rained. BAE cleaned it up, paved, walkways and such to make it less painful for the crews.
