Just wondering how often people who live in a coastal area like Hampton Roads actually go to the beach. Every day? Once a week? A few times a year?

Weekly. It is one of the wonderful benefits of living here. So convenient. We enjoy walking the boardwalk at Yorktown, surfing in Virginia Beach or getting away to the Outer Banks.

Never. I find the local beaches dirty (especially the Virginia Beach Oceanfront), the traffic and parking abhorent, and the water filthy.

Ive lived here probably 27 years, and Ive been to the beach less than 10 times.

Why are the beaches dirty? Is it trash, or are you talking about things like seaweed? How does it compare with other beaches, for example the beaches near Los Angeles?

I've never had an issue with a dirty beach. I go several times a year, at least 2 - 3 times a month, even in the winter. I typically go to little island in the summer, but I will go to the "strip" off season.

There are a few local beaches where the bacteria levels are sometimes high. The local news are great at keeping one apprised. Also, the lifeguards will let you know if the beaches are closed due to the levels.

Live in Va Beach, haven't been to the beach here in years. We occasionally make the trip to Ocracoke Island, NC for a vacation.

Ah, gotcha. That's actually fairly typical. I've lived in lots of beach cities and this has happened everywhere I've lived. How often does it happen, and how long does it usually last (just a few days or an entire summer)? Do they warn you not to go into the water at other beaches too, or simply alert you to high bacteria levels and close a single beach? Is it coming from a specific source, such as a factory?

They actually close the affected beach. I don't think a specific source has been identified, but it's not unusual for the higher levels to occur after a busy, crowded weekend.

In the summer we try to hit the beach in VB at least every other week. More often when kids were younger. The north end is our favorite, very clean and hardly ever closed. We had a beach house in Corolla for the last 10 years and sold it this past year. We used to go to Corolla whenever as often as we could..

Here is a shot from last week
