Hello all-

I live in Milwaukee WI now, and I need to get the hell out of here! I've lived in other cities before...I guess I'm just looking for something new. I am a bartender and student (I take online classes, so I can move anywhere and school will not be affected) and I've looked around (online) Virginia a bit, specifically Hampton. It's SO perfect for me, at least online

I'm single, no kids, and the thought of living near the ocean, an ARMY base, and the Air & Space Center would be well, perfect. I like rain, hot summers, but I don not like the cold, or snow.

Any advice for me?? Anything at all, even if it's "I don't think Hampton is right for you."

Are there any cool neighborhoods or anything? I'm looking for pretty-cheap-rent-apartments...

Thanks for any advice you can give me!!

Jackie

You were doing ok until you stated you were looking for cheap rent apartments... Hampton Roads has a very high cost of living.... What you are used to paying for a place where you live now, double or triple that for the same standard of living here

Could be a bit of an overstatement, there. According to this site, Milwaukee's cost of living index is 100.4 (where the US average is 100), and Hampton's is 98.1. Pretty similar.

My advice, whether you decide to live in Hampton or not, is visit the place. If your only experience with a city is online then you'll mostly see the best or the worst of a place when the majority of it probably falls somewhere between. Go to Hampton and check it out for yourself. Walk around, drive around, talk to locals. Get a feel for it in person because, almost undoubtedly, it will be different than the feel you've gathered through the internet.

Also, take what you read on forums like this one with a grain of salt. People come here to complain and be negative a lot more than they do to be positive about something.

Depends of what stats you look at.. When looking at national stats for 2010 Milwaukee's overall cost of living is 16% below the National average, with the median price for apartments for rent at only 575 per month... The latest stats for Hampton Roads shows the average monthly rent for apartments at almost 1000 dollars a month..... Quite a difference out of the paycheck each month..... And again then you have to compare the difference on overall cost to keep the same standard of living which will increase the cost even more

I too thought you would like it here until I saw "cheap."
There is a difference living out here on the east coast then in the mid-west. My roots are from IA, AZ, and CO; it was a culture shock for me. My DH who has lived in FL, CO, and TX dislikes it here. Many transplants don't care for it so I am glad you would be trying it while young and flexible, best time to venture around!
You never know, come give it a try as long as you have secured a job.

Good advice. I was thinking the same thing...try a vacation/scope-out first. Thanks!!

Hi Jackie - Can you please be more specific regarding where you live in Milwaukee, or at least, what kind of area you would like in Hampton Roads? Then we can give you more information regarding the fit. My main question is how much urbanism (in comparison with Milwaukee) are you looking to keep? Hampton has tons of options, from decently high (downtown/Mercury) to very, very low on the urbanism scale. i.e. do you want to be able to walk to places to eat, etc?

Regarding a trip down, Hampton has an international airport right next door (Newport News-Williamsburg). Come on down and plan to stay for a few days - there's tons to do, plus you can do a Hampton Roads tour - who knows, you may fall in love with another area.
