We are also considering different areas and this is one. Want to be near the water, have good cafes and restaurants, activities and artist community. Like rural living (read privacy) and old or historic houses. Would like to spend under $550K. Has any one answered Catsndogs and can anyone give me any thoughts? Thanks

Along with Gloucester you may want to You may want to consider Urbanna, Irvington, Kilmarnock, Deltaville in the Northern Neck or Mathews. All of the towns are small compared to Gloucester. Each has it's own character and identity. Gloucester has a few chain stores i.e. Wal Mart, Lowes, Home Depot. It has a quaint main street area near the courthouse full of shops restaurants etc. It is hard to make further recommendations without really knowing a lot more about what you want.
The main difference between Gloucester and the rest is the proximity to the Peninsula and it's larger retail stores, airport, cultural activities. Some want to be far from it others need it close by. All would offer older historic homes
Feel free to PM for further info..

i would look at fords colony-williamsburg. You can get a homes for that price there. Also Kingsmill-Williamsburg has one of the nicest gulf courses there. Busch Beer tour is held there. Both neighborhoods are beautiful and very safe and nice.
