Chesapeake is pretty nice. Mostly suburban now, but you still have your rural areas, mainly Hickory/Fentress, which lies on the N.C. border. However, that's slowly becoming suburban as well.

Rent, like in most other parts of Hampton Roads, is pretty steep. I'm guessing a decent apartment would start around $750, and probably at least $1,000 to rent a house. That might be a low estimate too...

The area is mostly diverse in all sections, so raising mixed kids shouldn't be a problem at all.

Chesapeake is part of Hampto Roads and close to Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Portsmouth, etc...so you can live in Chesapeake and work in any of those cities very easily. Depending on what you do, you should be able to find employment.

Default not a problem

I don't think you'll have any problem raising your kids in this area. There are many many many families of mixed ethnicities and races here. My neighborhood alone has many 'mixed' families and I've never heard of a problem or issue. It seems to be the norm here, thankfully.
