My dad lives in the Strawbridge area, and he get's a fair amount of jet noise. When I was kid visiting I thought it was cool, but I wouldn't want to hear it all the time. I know TCC in Virginia Beach has issues with the noise sometimes. I remember professors having to stop mid-lecture and wait until they passed. Don't quote me on this, but it seems like if you're within a 2 mile radius from Oceana you'll hear the jets at least somewhat frequently. Good news is that it's definitely not an issue everywhere.

As far as the actual loudness, like others have said: they're loud. Much louder than your average commercial plane. They fly low and fast, and often in groups of 2 or more. Personally, the noise has never really bothered me too bad. Like gregir said, you just kinda adapt and adjust (or wait a couple seconds) and go on with life.

I dont know, Ive lived right around Oceana in three different dwellings, including currently, for about half my life. I think you get used to the noise eventually.

Gregir gave a pretty spot on assessment. The noise is extremely loud, but its normally concentrated in very intense small blocks of time. The worst is when they decide to fly around 8pm at night.

Generally, about 90% of the housing you would consider "affordable" in Virginia Beach, is right around the base.

Any thoughts or info is appreciated
Only in Virginia Beach and only within 10 miles of the Oceanfront. I have yet to hear the jets as close as Burlington Coat Factory on Virginia Beach Boulevard. Even where I live off Rosemont, it isn't that loud.

It will affect your TV reception. I still can't get Fox 45. And what I do get, like WVEC 13 (ABC), I completely lose when the planes are flying overhead. It isn't that often, not enough to ever get used to it.

Wow really? I just googled it. From the way people are talking I'd thought that area would be loud.

Its not that bad at all. If you're indoors doing something you might miss it.

I lived on South Lynnhaven, and I call BS. There were times when it was so bad no matter what you did you heard it. Our apartment was in the landing path, and I swear to you we could read the numbers on the planes they were so low. The noise caused ringing in our ears, and when they do touch and goes at Oceana you can forget having any peace for hours!

Air Installation Compatible Use Zone (AICUZ) Information :: VBgov.com - City of Virginia Beach

There is a map connected to a link on the right hand side which breaks down the areas affected by Oceana/Fentress. Also master plan on bottom has some good info.

I was stationed at Oceana and I can honestly say I felt bad for the residents that lived around the base when we would do "high power" tests on the engines at night.....it sounds like the hammer of god coming down lol
