Default Newport news area

Hi everyone. My girlfriend, 8yr old daughter, and I plan to move from Baltimore to Virginia in March 07. We are considering the newport news area, but haven't made a final decision. I would like to hear some information about this area. We plan to rent an apartment or townhouse. What are the best neighborhoods? Pros, cons, suggestions. Thanks!!

The Denbigh area of Newport News is nice. Take a look at Turnberry Wells Townhomes ($800-$1000). You want to be very careful about neighborhoods in Newport News or Hampton; I wouldn't suggest living in Hampton at all. Yorktown for the most part is a good area. I lived in the Four Seasons apartments ($700 - $900) off Hampton Highway right on the Hampton/Yorktown line and really liked it. The Ft. Eustis area that htlong mentioned is nice but a little out of the way.

You'll want to live on the side of the water where you work. The commute from the Peninsula (Newport News, Hampton, Poqouson, Yorktown) to the Southside (Cheasapeake, Norfolk, VA Beach, Suffolk, Portsmouth) is a nightmare. If you end up on the southside you can find some great places in VA Beach but you'll be paying a lot for them. Most of Cheasapeake is nice. Norfolk is hit and miss (more miss) and I would not recommend Portsmouth.

You should be fine in Newport News just stay far away from the eastside. 1neighborhood i'd recommend would be kiln creek. I'd wouldn't know about the prices since i left HR 2 yrs ago. 1/2 that hood has YC schools wit a great reputation 1/2 is NN schools which should be fine for that section of the city. Hampton ain't a bad place to look either. Has decent schools, pretty low crime considering the area.

Default I won't!

I would look to Historic Yorktown, they have a nice safe apt complex right up the hill from the beach, not sure there would be an opening but its very affordabe and someplace I would consider if renting again. Any area, even less expensive ones in Williamsburg, like where I live is safe. It might seem a bit run down here, but its country like setting and I would live here before ever going to any place in nn. even Kiln creek. I just never feel safe in NN. Parts of yorktown are ok, but there are some bad parts too. Toano is very nice and they are building new apts complexes right off of 60 (near farmfresh) I believe more affordable housing will be going up in Toano in the near future too, same builders as down my neck of the woods. If it were me, I would pick Williamsburg and pay extra for housing and cut back elsewhere. I used to live in Denbigh, the good area?! I left in seven months, that should tell you something! Good luck!

I just want to thank all of you for taking the time to help us out. If any of you think of anything else, let me know. Like neighborhoods, or specific apartments to stay away from. How would the commute to the hospital or police department be? Thank you all so much.

Go at night, on the weekend and see if u would want to live there, go a few times, several even, best way to see if it would be ok to you or not, but in general, you want to spend at least 800 or more, preferablly a grand on a two to three bedroom unit. Nite.

When I was in the Navy (four years ago) I used to rent a 3 br house in Hampton for $595 month in a good middle class neighborhood (Carmen Drive). I was only a mile or two from the bay so it was fairly nice. I lived there for three years with NO problems whatsoever.
