I am looking to move from Minneapolis MN to Virgina. I want to live on the coast and looked at Norfolk and Virgina Beach area. A little about myself. I am wihte and my two children are mixed with black. I work in corrections currently and would like to continue or go back to Social Service. I have also lived in LA and worked with at risk teens from Compton and Long beach. Any suggestions on areas to live in? How is the job market in Social Service and or Corrections?

I don't know much about the social services or corrections market so I can't help there. Like anywhere, we have jails and we certainly have our share of at risk teens in the area so I would imagine your experience would be useful. I can tell you that mixed kids, especially black/white mixed kids, are not at all uncommon here so I don't think you should worry about them feeling out of place or anything like that.

In terms of where to live that depends on budget and what you want, there are tons of options but the area is mostly suburban and is not cheap but not that expensive expensive either. If you search the archives about "where to live" or something like that there are plenty of threads that talk about this so it might give you a good place to start then you can narrow your scope of questions and get more specific answers.

North vb is up and coming. It's close to the vb municipal center (court house, police station, etc). Damn neck road/general booth rd is a nice area.

Most of the jails in VA are run by the Sheriff Department. There are a few state prisons that use corrections officers but none really near Hampton Roads. There are some centers for at risk youth that use counselors.
