Lynnhaven is a mixed bag for a few reasons. Virginia Beach doesn't have any housing projects, per the traditional definition of government housing so you get a lot of working poor, or even not working at all, in areas like some of the housing complexes some of the respondents are referring to. You definitely have to check out the area; there are no places in Virginia Beach that actually look bad, but that doesn't really mean anything in Hampton Roads. The area can be sketchy.

An area I used to live in was a lot like that. I was out by Lynnhaven Elementary. Very interesting area to live in. Even though I live in Norfolk now that area had so much foot traffic and goings on I actually feel a lot safer where I'm at now than I did back then. Of course, it being Norfolk the bad areas are literally blocks away, but I don't have to deal with the transients I had to deal with out in that part of Virginia Beach.

From what I can tell, all of Lynnhaven (however big this part of the city actually is) is a mixed bag of transients, working poor, or those that can just get barely get into a house with those with a higher income. It definitely isn't Hilltop. The mall itself is quite nice though, and you would never tell from the crowds that the surrounding neighborhood is anything like that. The neighborhood of retail surrounding the mall leaves much to be desired IMHO though. Virginia Beach in general is full of those contradictions.

You must lead a sheltered life. I would say college park is the only place I wouldn't go after dark. I feel safe here. I run and bike alone without fear of anything, other than snakes. I'm not sure why you wouldn't feel safe being out after 11pm. Virginia Beach is one of the safest cities in the US for its size.

Maybe because I'm NOT sheltered and have been a victim of crime myself, and am female, I am more cautious!

I'm a female too, and a crime victim. You can't let it rule your life you have to move forward or remain a victim to the past your whole life. No one has that power over me, and you shouldn't let them have it over you either!
