Single mom relocating to VA Beach
I am considering moving to Virginia Beach. I have the opportunity to transfer with my company from Memphis, TN. I am 25 years old, and a single mother. I am looking to rent an apartment (for now), something in a safe area, but not too expensive. I would love to live close to the beach if the area is safe and moderately priced. I have read some of the other threads on here and there are many negative comments about the Virginia Beach area and I'm starting to have 2nd thoughts. Please help, and give me your honest opinion. thanks!

No response??? I really need help. I will be moving in a couple of weeks, and I have no idea what areas would be best for me. I have a 1 year old daughter and so safety is the first priority. I can't afford more than $800 for rent, I prefer a 2 bedroom apartment, but if I have to get a 1 bedroom that's fine for now. I've looked on rent.com and other apartment websites but I really don't know if these communities/ apartments are safe. Please help! Also, if anyone has any suggestions on child care centers, please advise. Thanks!

Hi, I'm sorry I can't really give you any advise, I just wanted to tell you I am in the same boat. We are going to relocate to the Va beach area as well. I don't know where to go either. I wish you luck and I hope we both like it!

For pete's sake, pick up the phone and call a realtor. They have the answers you need and cost you nothing.
I'm not a realtor.

Most of Virginia Beach is pretty safe, with the exception of a couple subdivisions near the Norfolk border and a few spots down by the beach. Other posters on this site act like any area of Va Beach that isn't brand new construction is a ghetto and dangerous. Not true at all. I think Va Beach is rated the safest large city in the country according to statistics. Your biggest problem is that $800 won't get you into very many 2br rentals in Va Beach. I think at $900-$1000, your options would improve dramatically.

thanks for your responses! I figured that $800 for a 2 bedroom probably won't get me many options but I can settle for a 1 bedroom for now if I have to. Thanks again, and I wish you luck as well Kristin.

HI Honeychild. I wish you luck with your new job and relocation. HOWEVER, I actually live in Virginia Beach and have made the decision to move out of the area. I am looking at the NOVA area because as much as I love this area, I find that after a certain point there's really not a lot of money to be made. I'm sure it also depends on your job, so you'll probably be fine. But for myself, I'm starting to reach a cap in salary with my employer (I work for a large auto insurance company). I've also decided that I wanted to get a government job, and the majority of them are up there.
Zach is right about a few areas near the beach and some of Norfolk. I live in the 23452 zip code off of Silinia drive. They are older homes (built in the 60's), but it's a very nice, quiet area. Rents are DEFINITELY going up, but that's to be expected anywhere. Zach's also right about the rent cost..$900-$1000 is right on target!
Good luck!
