The Pottery
Can anyone update me on the pottery in Williamsburg? Is it still there? Has it changed in the last 3 years?
I moved from VA in 2004 and am looking to come back and I just loved the pottery.

We were there a year ago, and I am sure it hasn't moved.
As far as how it is.... well, I had great memories of the way it was about 20 years ago and was very disappointed the last time. It isn't quite as big and just seemed dirtier.

They are in the process of demolishing ( It has been approved but demolition hasn't started) all of the older buildings on the south side of the railroad tracks, closest to Richmond Rd Rt 60 and putting in high end shops..( Jimmy would roll over in his grave if he knew)
Sadly since Jimmy Maloney the founder and owner passed away it has gone downhill. They still have fantastic deals and selection on certain items ( picture frames, salt glazed pottery, concrete lawn ornaments, Pepperidge Farm Bread. etc.) but nothing like it used to be.... a lot of the outside vendors have now moved to different locations away from The Pottery

LOL on the comment about Mr. Maloney rolling in his grave. You.are.so.right.
The pottery is no longer the pottery we knew and grew up with. If you need a couple of planters or want to browse to kill time it's great but otherwise, the pottery needs to go away.

It's sad to drive back towards the back entrance because you can see where RV's use to park and just how big of a deal the Pottery use to be. I still shop there for baskets, the fabricated old tin signs, candles, and trinkets but there is no clear direction there and frankly, it's a little scarey looking. I'm sad to hear that it will be demolished!

its front is being demolished but it will be rebuilt, it has to be hard for the pottery to maintain customers with the gigantic outlet malls that have opened in the last 15 years, all of them being name brands. but i will always enjoy walking around the pottery just looking at all the crap the have!

Thanks all. Yes, I remember when Jimmy died. Many said that the Pottery would die with him because his kids just didn't feel the same way about it as he did. I hope that someone (family or not) gets in there and makes it happen again.
As far as competition with the outlet malls...I never did see any. For the most part the two just didn't offer the same types of things and if they did the Pottery was just more fun.

Absolutely rolling in his grave......Knowing the details of that man's life and how he got bamboozled is beyond me.....I will wait on passing judgement about the final outcome of the pottery though. It definitely needs something. I always tell people that if they are willing to sort through the "stuff," there are some good things to be found. The garden center is pretty good and the framing department and silk flowers are pretty good as well. I've had the ladies design a couple for me and I was pleased with the way they turned out.
I do think it needs to be updated and cleaned up....
