I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this, when I lived in Chesapeake, I used to go online to do my grocery shopping. I think it was Farm Fresh. You could go online, fill your "order", then drive to the store later and they would have your shopping cart filled already for you, with groceries in bags, waiting in the freezer or cooler. You go in, go up to the register, pay for your groceries while they go get them and leave in a matter of minutes.

You are right about Bottom Dollar specials being about the same as Food Lion, and the selection is not as great. Now that the original Food Lion stores (for the most part) have been remodeled, they are much nicer. I do my regular trips to Kroger, b/c they have some of the specialty items I look for (out of Rachael Rays books), and they tend to put milk on special more often- for the weeks I can't get to Sams Club.
With four kids, that is a big deal.
My husband is crazy about Farm Fresh, but he can only afford to shop there because I don't!

I'm all about price points and sadly you can't ignore Super Walmart. However be aware at the Walmart on Military Hwy in Norfolk. You will be approached by panhandlers. Women hold your pocketbooks close - I've almost had mine snatched as I put my bags in the trunk. Just be alert as if you lived in a BIG city. I ended up calling the cops after I confronted the homeless guy in his failed attempt. Tough to scare the subway riding chick from New York.

Try looking up local farmers or a local farmers market. There is also The Health Trail on Warwick in Hilton, if you are looking for healthier choices.

We go to Sam's club to get our milk. It is a full dollar cheaper than Wal-Mart last time we checked. We got milk at Sam's the other day and it was still under 4.00$ a gallon. We also go to the bread store for all of our bread and the farmers market, at Princess Anne, for fruit and veggies when it's open. We have a deep freezer so most of our food is bought at Sam's club.

Hmm, I have never seen nor heard of Bottom Dollar til now...
I do most all of my shopping at Wal Mart, but their prices have risen to meet the grocery stores.
I go to Farm Fresh for the meat specials, and I shop at Food Lion quite a bit these days. There were so many people in Wal Mart yesterday, I just turned around and went in the other direction. Food Lion was almost as bad.
I did not get any non-food items at Food Lion. I could not fathom the prices! I suppose I will stick to Wal Mart for those, until they meet Food Lion on those prices as well.
As far as Farm Fresh goes... I love them, I like how they have revamped their stores, and I love the fact that there is a Starbucks in there.... but the prices knock me down and drag me out the door.

Don't go there anymore! Trek just a few miles down the road and go to the one off of Portsmouth Blvd by the mall. The gas spent is worth it, to not have to worry out at MC area. The only way I go out there, is to pass by it up on the hwy going towards Chesapeake...

We go to Farm Fresh for most of our groceries. With their quality of food and service, weekly specials, and gas discount receipts it tends to save us $. However, we do get our milk from Kroger because they have much better prices on organic milk.
For more specialty items I shop through organicfooddepot.com. They offer pretty good discounts, especially on bulk items, and their "splits" are awesome.
If I am traveling on 64 I always try to build in time to stop at Trader Joe's.

I used to dislike Walmart, but now I admit I'm thankful for the store. When money is tight, Walmart is a great place to shop. I go there for most of the basics. I shop the specials at Food Lion and am starting to take advantage of some of the specials at stores like Rite Aid when time permits. I only go to Farm Fresh for about five speciality items that I cannot get elsewhere. It is a much nicer store, but I find that I spend about a third more when I shop there as opposed to when I shop at Walmart or even Food Lion. The other grocery stores are too far, but since Farm Fresh has a million signs saying how its prices are cheaper than Harris Teater (sp?), I imagine HT is quite expensive! I've never really managed to save much money at bulk stores. I seem to do better just buying bulk items at Walmart when they are available.
