Are there any villages in Hampton roads? Like, with a Main Street, store fronts, restaurants, etc.? Thanks!

There's plenty of that, Hampton Roads is 7 or 8 different cities. When I think Village, I think a town within a town.

I am not sure that any of the towns that comprise Hampton Roads are small enough to be considered a village as you are describing. There are areas in each town where one can walk to shops and restaurants, but not one town with one main street where all the shops are located.

From Village, I'm assuming the OP doesn't mean strip malls.

OP- few, far between, and those that exist are small. Off the top of my head:

  • Smithfield (the main street is Main Street)
  • Hilton Village in Newport News
  • Colley Avenue in Ghent, Norfolk (not really a village, but if you squint you might be able to think it's one)
  • Duke of Gloucester/Merchant's Square in Williamsburg
  • Downtown Suffolk (a little more main street feel than Ghent, but still not really a village feel)
Unfortunately even though this area was settled when there would be the exact thing you're looking for, few exist today.

I don't mean to hijack your thread. Last week I visited Smithfield and I was pleasantly surprised. Although the town is quite small, the downtown area is quite charming. Has anyone eaten at any of the establishments downtown?

High Street in Olde Towne Portsmouth might have that Main Street feel the OP is looking for too.

I have a client who is moving back to Smithfield from Norfolk. he and his wife love the small town charm that Smithfield provides for them. And to citydweller's question, I have not eaten at any of the places recently but have had good meals in the past. Also have enjoyed the community theater in Smithfield.

Smithfield Station, but I wouldn't really consider that downtown. It was okay. I wouldn't go out of my way for it, but it's charming for sure, and the river view is very pretty.

Smithfield is great. Gloucester and Mathews courthouse are fairly village like. They are on the northern fringes of the metro. Both are quaint. Mathews Courthouse is particularly interesting in the summer. The influx of vacationers returning to their summer homes liven the place up.

info on Gloucester..
