Im looking to rent a house in Hampton.
What are the better neighborhoods and the ones I should stay away from.
I'm going to be working at the Hampton Veterans Administration.
I'm looking to rent for $1600 a month or more.
How's public transportation in Hampton. I understand that I have to take a bridge anywhere I want to go outside of Hampton. Is this true?

Thanks for the feedback 😊

You don't need to take a bridge to go anywhere outside of Hampton... HOWEVER, Hampton is separated from a huge chunk of the metro area its in by a very wide river and a very large harbor, so if you want to go check out the most urban parts of the area, you'd have to take bridges to get "Southside".

The Bridges, uh, like to get backed up. To put it lightly.

Public transportation sucks. Are you looking for a family neighborhood or a more "fun" type spot?

Elizabeth Lakes would be my first choice. Good schools and close to the VA.

I dont think you should try to survive in this area without a car unless you are living in norfolk and you can take The Tide Train to go to where you want to go. The buses in Hampton do not have the average working class that takes it.

I like Hampton as a nice quiet city. As with anywhere, there are some parts that are less desirable. For highschool, if you can get into the Kechougtan or Bethel school districts, those are the better 2 of the 4 high schools here. I like Hampton for the good balance between cost of living, safety, and access to family entertainment.

You can't take "The Tide Traiin" to where you want to go in Norfolk. There is one line and there are a lot of places it doesn't go.

Also you DO NOT want to live in Norfolkand work at the VA.

Elizabeth Lakes is zoned for, and across the street from, Kecoughtan.

Hampton Roads is two distinct areas. Hampton, Williamsburg, Newport News and the suburbs are on what is known as the Peninsula. Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake and Suffolk are on the Southside. Going from the Peninsula to the Southside is sort of like going into Manhattan from the other boroughs.

Thank you everyone.

My youngest child will be out of high school, so the school system is not a factor.
I am looking into applying to Thomas Nelson CC or TCCC for him.

I'm sorry to hear that PT is not good because that's how he will be getting to campus, depending on the college that accepts him.

Any other good neighborhoods other than Elizabeth Lakes?

Thank you for your terrific feedback

Willow Oaks and Malvern are also good neighborhoods in the same area of Elizabeth Lakes off Fox Hill Rd.
There are several newish subdivisions along Semple Farm Rd. in the northern section of the city near NASA and Langley AFB, two of which are called Baker Farm and Belgrade.
