Teen arrested after shooting in brawl near Green Run High | HamptonRoads.com | PilotOnline.com

This is not an uncommon occurance for GRHS.

Define uncommon. everyday, once a week, 3 times a week... How many shootings like this have happened near this high school? I do understand there is a problem of volience. But one thing you must remember, that no neighborhood is safe, unless its residents take them back.

Its hard to say how often this sort of thing happens because rarely do you hear about the incedents. Most of the problems result from kids in and around the Twin Canal apts. . What I am saying is that as far as choices of areas in VB to live and having school aged children, Green Run/Bayside/Salem schools should be your last choice. People may live there and be very happy, but as far as crime and violence go, there are much better areas to live in.

As someone who lives in the Green Run Area here are the good and bad. The good is that the housing in affordable for families, it is close to everything, and the population is mainly younger people. The bad is that the area is one of the most densely populated areas of the city which is giving the crime stats a boost. It is also an older developed area so the roads are not able to handle the amount of traffic. I didnt go to the schools in this area so I cant say for them, but the area is rapidly changing and the housing is so varied. The district has housing costs ranging from Townhouses selling for 150k to single family houses and condos selling for over 400k. The area has the most renters in the area, which can cause the neighborhood to decay. I like the area. I am less than 5 minutes away from 2 malls, 2 walmarts, a Kmart, and a Target. I also have about 50 restaurants and about the same for retail. I also have about 10 grocery stores to choose from. 2 hospitals are about 10-15 minutes away with medical centers about 5 minutes away. Close to the New Downtown area and close to the Sportsplex and Amphitheater.
Hope this helps you with your decision.

Default Very Harsh against Green Run

Reading these past posts, I have to say it's really surprising that most people think the Green Run area is bad. Especially Green Run High School. Being a recent graduate of Green Run High, I have to say that everyone's assumption of Green Run is completly wrong. Green Run isn't a bad school, it used to be, but it isn't anymore. I attended Green Run in Sept of 2001 and graduated in June of 2005, that school could be far from bad. The school does have a lot of diversity and backgrounds which is what makes it unique. If I had children, I would have no problem in letting them attend Green Run.

A school you should be worried about is Cox High School, where the drug problem is rampant. But of course the majority of the students who attend Cox have parents who have money, so the problem is never reported in the news. Money can buy and cover up a lot of things. School rating websites, won't tell you this.

Why is it that any place that doesn't have "Estates" or Plantation" attached to it, is not an area that is recommended up here. The Green Run area may not be as prestigious as the Great Neck area, or the Little Neck area, but that doesn't mean it's a place to avoid. As someone mentioned before, stay at a hotel for a couple of weeks and see if the area is for you.

Same here, Green Run area is one of the most connected areas shopping and conveniences of Va. Beach whether you have a car or not.

My only gripe is no sidewalk at the intersection of South Independence and Holland, just dirt still.

If you like running around water and city parks Mt Trashmore is very pleasant at dawn and dusk.

I am too am grad of Green Run and before I went there I was told of the fear factor involve but none of that happened.

Visit the area from time to time and it just keeps getting more development.

BTW I graduated from Green Run when they had those Carper Naval Housing.

Wish they were still around because the park around there looks a bit rusted unmowed and unused.

As with some other poster the 7-11 still looks like a lost relic on Windsor Oaks.

Those were some fun days.

I went to Green Run High in the mid 80's, it wasn't the greatist then, the only problems that occured was bomb threats about once a month, I ran into someone about 8 years ago that said it is not called "Gang Run", I don't know how it is today, but with any school system you will always find bad.

It seems that many have been defending GRHS, and that is fine, but the simple fact is it is always rated lowest out of VB high schools. Its not that the school is just terrible, with gangs controlling the school, but if there is a school in VB to be concerned about sending your children to, it is one of them. The Green Run area typically has the highest crime rate in VB, and the school has always had a bad reputation. Where there's smoke, there's fire. If you were comparing GRHS, and the Green Run area to other areas in VB to live and go to school, it should be way down on your list.
