Here's the problem. My sister in VA Beach has kindly taken in the grown son of her best friend up here in New England. The guy quit his job here after his friend died. He was despondent and just left the job. His mother thought he might be better off in a new place and my sister offered to take him in.

Sooooo-he has now been living there for six months and still hasn't gotten a job. He tries, half heartedly, but dresses like a slob or doesn't show up for the interview.

The guy doesn't have a drivers license because "I'm afraid of what I might do if I got behind the wheel of a car." My sister has tried finding jobs for him but nothing ever comes of it. She's taking him to job fairs but I'm thinking this guy has problems that need to be dealt with first. A young man who doesn't even want his license??? Something is wrong.

He has no health insurance. This is a vicious circle. No health insurance>>can't get counseling. My question is if there are any free mental help agencies that might help him. Do they only take drug addicts or really disturbed people? Would they just take a very depressed (apparently) young man who is going in circles and wasting his life? Thanks for any advice.

This webpage lists mental health services offered by the Virginia Beach Human Services Dept.:

Mental Health :: VBgov.com - City of Virginia Beach

Though the listing of services for adults emphasizes the elderly and addictions, the description for adult outpatient services appears to indicate that mental health counseling is available for those without drug addiction issues.

Good luck.

Thank you. I'll forward it to my sister. BTW she got up to take him to a job fair today and he wouldn't go!
Something is very wrong.

I would send him back to where he came from. Times are very tough in Hampton Roads, but not even making an effort is not something I would put up with.

...If there are job fairs, that means there's still employment to be had.

He doesn't have any money. My sister shouldn't have to pay for him--she works but can't afford his medical bills and his parents don't have the money --and they don't even believe it's a mental health issue. All they do is yell at him.

Anyway, most of those programs only pay for drug addicts so he can't get help. This is a nice kid, no drugs, just something must have snapped when his best friend died. He can't get over it. My sister's latest plan is to sit down and draw up a written contract with him that he will get a job within X amount of time. If not, he goes back home. I hate to see a young man's life ruined because of a tragedy but he does not seem to be able to get over it and move forward.

Yes, there are jobs. A lot more jobs than where he comes from. My sister went to the job fair alone--part of her job is to help people get jobs--and thought it was very informative. Too bad HE wouldn't go.

If he needs grief counseling, there are groups he can join:

Eastern Virginia Support Groups - Healing the Spirit

Does he attend a church? Often the clergy/pastor/rabbi, etc. can provide counseling.

Thank you very much. He might go to something like that.
