Hi everyone! My husband has orders to the hospital at Portsmouth and we are researching areas to live. We have a 13 month old son, and only have one car. We would ideally like a place in a safe area, that has a lot to offer within walking distance. A gated apartment community is something he mentioned. What is the job market like? Ideally, I'd like to find a pt time job 20 hours a week.

My husband doesn't want to spend more than $1000, but I realize that might be unrealistic.

Sorry but I can't give you any ideas in your budget. This area has a high cost of living.

If you're living in Portsmouth, unless you're by the Chesapeake/Suffolk border, you're going to want a gated community. My suggestion is that you try to find something out in Suffolk or Chesapeake near the 64/664 interchange.

The job market here is not good as far as I am concerned unless you've got a skill a defense contractor needs. Unless you've got some special license or trade, you are likely looking at minimum wage to $10 an hour with no benefits. I would think that your child care costs would make a part time job economically not worthwhile.

I will agree with Spazkat9696's comment about the cost of living being high here.

Portsmouth makes the news a lot around here both for crime and its governmental issues. I don't think I would want to live there. Chesapeake or Suffolk are better options.

Good luck with your move.
