My best friend, her husband and daughter are moving to Newport News with her mother in law come February. I was hoping to move my family to the area as well as soon as we get some money together. We are currently in New Jersey and are looking for a safe area with good public schools. We currently live in a city with a mixed population and areas of crime in most of town aside from the section we live in so we're used to avoiding certain sides of town while living in an area that meets our desires. I've read that Newport News is like that as well but don't know quite where to look or what streets to avoid. We are a young family (28 and 30 years old with a 6 and 4 year old) if that helps. I'm willing to look in a 30-40 minute radius of the area if required. Our price range is around $1000_$1200 per month to rent. Thank you.

Are you looking for an apartment or a house? Two bedrooms or do you need more? Hilton Elementary and Riverside Elementary are both good schools. Sedgefield is a bad elementary school. I don't know much about the other elementary schools.

Why do you want to move? Because of your friend? Do you have jobs lined up?

Here is a link to a Virginia Dep't of Education website re Sedgefield Elementary.

https://p1pe.doe.virginia.gov/report...schoolName=347

This school is not accredited by the state. The low scores show why. It is my understanding that the teacher turnover is very high at this school.

You can go on the Va. Dep't of Ed. website and look up this info on other schools.

Right now we're living with my parents and want to be back on our own agaib as soon as we can afford it. I just finished college and my fiance is looking for another job so we are pretty much at the perfect time to both start new. He is a recovering addict and we don't really have anything left here and no desire to stay and want to start new with a clean slate. An out of state move seems like the best way we can think to do that. We are looking to rent. My major was Dietetic Technology so I can work pretty much anywhere that involves food (hospital, nursing home, school food service ect.) and he's a mechanic /tow truck driver so those jobs are also pretty much anywhere. I'll definitely avoid that school you've mentioned. What about Chesapeake? I've read that a lot of it is very expensive but saw some affordable apartments when I looked that has highly rated schools.

To be perfectly honest, those are really terrible reasons to move.

A) You're going to incur the cost of moving your things, which even if you do it yourself, is obviously money you don't have, or money you should leave in savings.

B) Going to ANY area with no job lined up is a bad idea. The job market in Hampton Roads is dismal at best, and is getting worse. Layoffs have just come from some of the biggest employers in the area, and the military sequestration continues to have negative impact. The outlook for the future is not bright.

C) I don't know what type of addiction your fiance had, but the Hampton Roads area has some of the highest alcohol abuse numbers in the country.

D) You haven't said whether you've even visited the area before. What kind of lifestyle are you looking for? What if what you're looking for and what the Hampton Roads area is are polar opposites?

E) You're leaving a safety net (your parents) to go some place where you know nobody. Your friend? Friends come and go, only family is forever.

You're best off staying put for now, doing a tremendous amount of research, and most importantly, save, save, save!
