I will be moving to the area in July. I think I want to live in Williamsburg but I have heard commute times may be to long. I have been told 20 minutes and at the same time others say over an hour. Please help discern the truth to commute times.

Where in Williamsburg? That affects your commute time.

It all depends on the traffic and the time of day you will be commuting. Both times are correct. In the past few weeks, it seems like a major commuter road in the Hampton Roads area has been closed for hours on an all-to-frequent basis. I-64 frequently has backups and accidents. Too often of late, there have been times when either the east-bound or west-bound lanes have been totally shut down.

Also remember that when Busch Gardens is open, that too will factor into your commute time.

Default Thanks for the response!

We are looking to stay in the Jamestown school district as we have two school age children and like the schools there.

I think what I am learning is that the commute varies radically, depending on conditions. Tourist traffic from Busch Gardens, accidents, construction, lane closures, secondary route closures, etc..

How about those military folks who are traveling prior to 5am? Does time of day reduce and increase traffic flow? What are the worst times? If everything is working properly then is 20 to 30 minutes a fair estimate?

I know I am asking many questions but I need to know. My second option would be Grafton and Tab school districts since they would be closure to Fort Eustis.

Thanks for helping
Alan

Today's (1/31/16) Daily Press main story on page 1 is titled, "I-64 Survival Guide." The caption says, "With 21 miles under construction by the end of 2016, getting around the Peninsula is going to get harder." One of the suggestions is to "Pack Some Snacks."

You are correct that a lot of variables will factor into your commute time. The commute will be do-able, but there will be frustrating times. Hopefully someone who actually does this commute will respond.

Good luck!

Fort Eustis is roughly Exit 250 on I-64, Williamsburg is about 238-242. There really isn't any driving time, maybe 10-20 minutes at worst unless someone causes an accident near 247. Even so, there is route 199 (I think) that runs Parallel to 64.

It's route 143 that runs parallel to 64 if there ever is a back up on the interstate you can use that and get to Fort Eustis . Again depending on the neighborhood you choose commute time will be between 15 and 25 minutes .

Default Thanks

Thank you for the information it has been helpful. I can see that Williamsburg is a viable option to homestead and drive to Fort Eustis.
