So after some research, I found a school called Crittenden Middle School that is a STEM school. It is in Newport News. Any insight on NN or Crittenden Middle School? I am now looking for a rental house in Newport News so that my son can attend this school. However, what area would be good that is not too far from both Langley AFB and Crittenden that is in NN?

Personally, I would be wary of sending my child to Crittenden Middle School. Generally, if you want to be in a good part of Newport News, it's essential to be north of Mercury Blvd. (Crittenden is north, but not by much). Generally, the central part of Newport News is your best bet. (We live in central Newport News and are very happy here.) Renting in an area that funnels into Guildersleeve MS/Menchville HS would be advantageous for you. Then, even if you're denied entry into Booker T. Washington, you'll still be zoned for good schools.

I will definitely look into the area you suggested as far as rentals. I agree, if it doesn't work out with Crittenden, I can try Gildersleeve, it is rated one higher than Crittenden, but it sounds better overall. It is really tough to blindly find a nice area to live when you are not from the area. Thank you so much for your help!

This is my first year in Yorktown. I was doing the school search like you. I have a middle schooler and a high schooler. I chose the Grafton school district and it has been very good for us. I live next to a subdivision called Coventry. The commute to Langley is good. My kids are happy and challenged. Grafton tried very hard to help my daughter get the classes she wanted. We came in after they had registration for local kids. They accommodated us well. My son is working on his hovercraft for his science project. He is fitting right in. I was told to stay in the Yorktown school district. I looked at all the options and I am glad I made this decision. I considered Williamsburg but the traffic looked too bad. Most of my neighbors have connections to the military. Some retired and some active duty. Some Army and some Air Force. All are friendly and helpful to us. We are an Army family.
