For those who cannot comprehend how such a mistake on our part could be made, remember: if everyone
had unlimited time and financial resources to fully investigate their next city of residence, then no one
would ever move somewhere they did not already like. Therefore, no one would ever relocate more than once.
As far as I can tell, these forums did not exist before our arrival here.
If they did, and if we read them, we definitely would not have come here.
Prior to this unfortunate move, I had not lived on or near military installations or tourist destinations.
Therefore, I had no way to know just how much I would dislike the close proximity of both.
Having military personnel from all over the world is hardly a recommendation for extensive ethnic and cultural diversity.
This offers little in expanding my horizons. Nearly every foreign national I have met here is connected in
some way to the military installations nearby (*obviously*).
Their focus is not on languages, culture, and international films. In other words,
I have met very few people who share my interests.
I was warned by an acquaintance prior to coming here that the area was, in his own words, 'Unsophisticated'.
Others in New England told me I would miss the cultural landscape there. My own field of training is in theater/film,
languages, and music (operatic/cabaret). I find this area offers significantly less than New England and Dallas. And yes,
we did come here for a job, and no, there is no reason to complain about the job. The job is not the problem. Understand?
Yes? No? Perhaps some here will have the pleasure of having to make an unpleasant decision such as this in their
lifetime as well. And deal with the consequences.
I have perused other forums about Hampton Roads. Sometimes I am shocked at the sheer venom many of the locals level
at those they deem 'whiners' and 'malcontents' simply because they are disappointed with the quality of life here in
comparison to other locations where they have lived.
Perhaps after reading this, some may realize my dissatisfaction with this area runs far deeper than only the climate and
the beach.
And yes, we are still firmly committed to transferring out of here as soon as possible.

I'm with you Dallas, I will move ASAP from here as well. Living in the Hampton Roads is a misery.

You don't get it both ways. On the rare occasions someone posts a *positive* thread about Hampton Roads, you haters are in that thread IMMEDIATELY telling us all about how we're mistaken(and that's not a royal we, I'm now here but I still like my screen name). We get it shoved down our throats that you feel this place is an uncultured craphole where the real estate market will crash momentarily and every young person with skills is gone, except for apparently the poster himself who has been saving for literally years but can't hire a U-haul van.
So I guess you can quit whining about the upbeat folks hijacking your nega-threads.

IMHO, only a pathetic person would live in a place that is self described as "a misery." If you don't have the kahunas to move, quit telling everyone that you are gonna.
Probably gonna get banned for this. I just can't understand people who can't look at the positive side of things.

agreed and starting several threads about the same thing is very old. These forums were created to help people relocate...or so I was told some time ago.

This area is bland?! Crawl out of your hole dude. Drive across the CBBT, drive down through Pungo and take the ferry over to NC, go bike/boat the great dismal swamp etc etc. I could go on and on, there ARE a lot of strip malls but what medium sized area does not have strip malls everywhere now? Heck even rural Waynesboro near where I used to live has become strip mall striken. Even out in the storied West (Denver for example) is nothing but tract homes and strip malls...

You can argue the merits of any list, even the ones that rank HR low, but I just can't see this area attracting or retaining young professionals. The pay is crappy compared to other metros, the cost of living is extremely high, and overall this area is pretty bland. As Stinkyy said, strip mall hell!!!

So, I'm coming out of the house this morning and who do you suppose I catch breaking into my neighbors car? Telemonsters black person, that's who! Well, the folks next door and I subdue him and turn him over to the VBPD. As they are taking him away, he turns to me and says, " man, I hate Hampton Roads".

1. Actually there is data that RTC was so nice to have found and posted that actually supports, my and others claims that young people are moving away. Over the ten years between 1990-2000 there has been significant shift in the population make up to those 40+. 10 years is not a generation, so you cant use the "well its just the baby boomers greying". No, its not. Its the young people leaving wholesale. Turns out, I guess they dont really like coming out of college making next to minimum wage, and trying to exist in one of the most overpriced areas in the country.
2. A. An intellegent move is not made spur of the moment, packing up a van, and moving. Thats a great way to set yourself up for failure and dissapointment in a new city.
B. Years of savings for an average person in Hampton Roads may come to a few thousand bucks. That MAY cover the cost of a uhaul to a real city. Unfortunatley, its not going to cover living expenses while one searches for a job in the new area.

First its rtandc......I figured out you think that it is 3 letters with the word "and" in the middle ...it is not.....r t a n d c if you must know is the first letter for each word in a six word phrase that we like to use around my household....like LOL or IMO or BRB is used on a PC.....anyway....
I call BS on the moving part.....People move every day on short notice...and many times it is families with two working adults with kids involved.......Your excuse is that you are just afraid to make the move.....
how is failure and disappointment in a new city any different then the failure and disappointment you seem to have here in Hampton Roads........
