There is definatley worse places in the country you can be. I will give you that. Id say, pretty much the whole states of Mississippi, Maine, Alabama, South Carolina, West Virginia, Wyoming, Vermont, New Hampshire, North Dakota, and Montana are worse, and many states do not have anywhere considerably better, such as New Mexico, Louisiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Idaho, Florida, Iowa, South Dakota, Alaska, New Jersey.

I have to disagree with the Kentucky remark. I grew up in Lexington (which, yes, has half the population of VA Beach) but is not rural by any means.
I would say that Lexington and Louisville would be better than here for several reasons such as cultural opportunities, earnings to home expenses, to education (University of Kentucky and University of Louisville).
I choose to live here because I LOVE the beach, but to me that is all this area has to offer myself.

I think, in ways, Kentucky is better, but I dont think it is considerably better. I actually considered Lexington for a long period of time before I finally wrote it off because of the low number of positions requiring degrees in combination with the large percentage of degree holders.
I certainly can give it lower cost of living, but the salaries dont take great advantage of that.

Actually, I make good money here, but was making $14,000 MORE a year in Lexington. I guess it all depends. Yes, there are a lot of people with degrees in Lexington.

Sure it does depend, and granted, I focus primarily, and sometimes exclusively only on finance and accounting opportunities. It does narrow things down.

Interesting, I'm actually trying to decide whether to stay in Ft. Knox, Kentucky long term (BRAC to KY next year; staying for at least 1 year) or come back to Hampton Roads. I definitely want to taste Louisville before i make a final decision.

I personally would consider staying where you are (for now).

I'm with you there - you know my dislike of NoVa !!
We were on vacation 2 weeks ago - went to Las Vegas, Zion, Grand Canyon and suburbs of Phoenix. A few days before we left, the big boss brought up hubby's promotion again. This has been on hold for over a year due to the economy, but the move for us was definitely Ft Lauderdale. I have been very excited about Florida for a while now. All of a sudden the boss is leaning toward Henderson, NV (suburb of Las Vegas). Well, after our trip -we have found that we LOVE the Southwest, even a bit more than Florida.
This past week has been a real emotional time for us. Seeing the SW, knowing that a move is approaching, loving both Florida AND Nevada. Realizing that HR was really only a 'layover' for our family - has been for 6 years now. I could never hate HR - it has it's own lifestyle that suits me very well. I also know that my time here is limited and we will be moving on to try something very different. As a family we want to experience everything life has to offer, and it will hopefully all work out in the end.
