Used to commute from Greenbriar to Camp Pendleton (Birdneck Rd)
Then from Indian River Rd/64 to Norfolk Naval Base
Then from Indian River Rd/64 to NASA Langley (Armistead)
Then from Indian River Rd/64 to Norfolk Naval Base
Then from Indian River Rd/64 to downtown Norfolk
Then from downtown Norfolk to downtown Norfolk (Yippy!)
Then from downtown Norfolk to Jefferson Ave (45min)
Then from downtown Norfolk to downtown Norfolk (Yippy!)
I used to call into the AM real estate shows while commuting from Jefferson Lab, and rip them up. The people I called into are out of business or caught up in the wextrust fraud. Go figure.

One complains of house prices because the median house price is 4-5 times the median household income, and 6-10 times the median salary, both unaffordable by any common measure. One complains louder, because there is no logical basis for the rediculously overpriced nature. One believes if Virginia Beach had the cultural and historic value of New York City, or a tropical climate, it may have some sort of justification for being overpriced. One believes if the military left Hampton Roads, the population would shrink 50% within 20 years, as the retirees died off, the 20-30 year olds left, and nobody replaced them. One believes that is the only possible way Hampton Roads will ever become anything more then a cess pool being floated by tourism and the governments tit.
One finds it rediculous for another to assume that transportation expenses are the root of the unaffordable nature of Hampton Roads housing. One actually nearly spit water when reading that assumption.

Shhh. Don't tell anyone. Today is the first day I've driven to work in 7 days. Have to ship some stuff off that I sold on ebay after work.
But before this opportunity came up, I was commuting 45 mintues x 2 each day. That wasn't so fun :-(

HR woes
The biggest problem here is mass transit.Try getting thru a tunnel during the busiest times, there is no compromise between the peninsula and south side. One bright spot is the Tide, will relieve some congestion and it goes right by Harbor Park.

I have to disagree. The biggest problem here is lack of affordable housing by far.
Dont get me wrong, lack of reliable public transporation is certainly a problem, but the fact that the family income needed to afford the median house is over 20k higher then it is, is a major problem.

I guess for someone that is new to the area affordable housing could be a problem, but for anyone that has owned a home for 5 or more years around here home prices are really not that big of a deal unless you are the 1% trying to buy or sell at this time....
Trafffic has been and will continue to be the biggest problem for this area, and it will continue to get worse faster then whatever band-aid solutions they try to repair it with

There would be more then 1% of people trying to buy if the housing was more affordable. Just because a large number of people have been completely priced out of the market doesnt mean they dont count any more.

Traffic isnt ever much of a problem for me, and I believe its only a very bad problem going to and from the pennisula, and at a few bottlenecks on the secondary highways, primarily two lane roads that should be about 6.
The reason they can only band aid most things is because
1. The area was built around the roads that werent meant to hold the population that built around it. That is because the whole area was terribly planned.
2. Opposition to public transportation is steep. Nobody around here wants to give up their single person commute, nor do they want to spend tax dollars building anything. They *****, *****, *****, about the traffic, and dont want to do anything to relieve it.

Actually, many of the people that buy or are trying to buy, shouldn't. If you're living paycheck to paycheck, you shouldn't be buying a house. But the stupid gov't to support stupidity (or to get the sucker population locked into a lifetime of debt and servitude) seems to be all too willing to try to get clueless young people to take on INSANE debt loads (paying multiples of what the prior owner bought for a few years earlier) or get others into buying homes.
But at some point, when everyone has 5 houses, you're going to run out of people to rent all the extras to. And when the value plummet because the country isn't really very productive and we can't find anyone to lend us money, people will cry.
It's all good though. China is sitting on tons of cash, and our gov't won't let them buy the things they want. At some point they are going to get upset.

Could be self correcting. I think perhaps the good skilled fun people leave, and what moves in is the lower grade people who are pushed out of other markets.
Really, on the grand scheme of the USA. Hampton Roads doesn't really matter.
