We are researching areas for retirement. Most of the homes we see are in James City County or the City of Williamsburg. Can anyone offer pros and cons with these areas regarding safety, taxes etc. Thanks so much.

Property taxes are lower in Williamsburg. Otherwise, they are pretty similar. It's hard to tell where the city/county line is without looking it up...one side does not "feel" safer than the other in my experience/opinion.

James City County could be considered as a suburb of Williamsburg, along with York County. Williamsburg may be "more urban" in that respect. Williamsburg is the county seat of James City County, according to Wikipedia, although Williamsburg is an independent city, along with the other six cities in the region. They do share a courthouse, if that helps.

I agree with stva that one does not necessarily feel safer than the other. James City County reminds me of areas outside of the county I grew up in Ohio, where Akron is the county seat, and the rest of the county is suburbs to Akron. Once you leave Summit County and drive through the surrounding counties, you encounter areas that look and feel a lot like James City County and York County. More nature, less "city", more county, etc.

If you want something exurban, "rural", but within a short drive of the city, I'd go with James City County. If you want the city, I would go with Williamsburg.

Thank you both. This is helpful. We noticed quite a few developments in Williamsburg are very close to tourist areas and have been gravitating to James City County. But, its great to know there is not a tremendous difference in crime statistics. Overall, both seem like nice areas for retirement.

I lived there roughly ten years ago. Your want to visit the areas to get a good feel. There are a few really lousy areas sprinkled in, among Beautiful ones. The price of the home will guide you. If it’s low.... there is a reason. Good luck. Been there, done that!
