This convention sounds interesting, but the entrance fee is kind of high. How many people show up at these conventions?

Another fun event this weekend. We have gone here for years...
Since 1957, Urbanna has celebrated the beloved bivalve that for years bolstered the town's local economy. And this weekend the town celebrates 51 years of celebrating the oyster with the 51st Urbanna Oyster Festival.


It all starts on Friday with the crowning of the Oyster Festival Queen and Little Miss Spat and the Urbanna Oyster Festival Firemen's Parade. Young ladies and little girls alike compete for the honor of Queen and Miss Spat (baby oyster) based upon their work on a community project, an essay response, school grades and an interview.

On Saturday, visitors and locals alike can enjoy the Oyster Festival Parade, the festival's claim to fame. The parade features antique cars, elaborate floats, several marching bands, beauty queens and a Shriners contingency. You might also watch professional shuckers from across the state participate in an Oyster Shucking Contest.

Make time to visit the Oyster Festival Waterfront at the Urbanna Town Marina at Upton's Point and the Old Tobacco Warehouse, one of the oldest surviving tobacco mercantile structures in the United States. The waterfront will be open on Friday and Saturday.

Parents will be happy to note that there is a Children's Activity Corner, as well. Kids can unleash their creative fancies in a wide range of crafts, painting, sand-art and other activities. Stay tuned for fantastic puppet shows and jugglers, too.

The festival has a walking Pay-as-You-Go policy. Parking varies according to which side of town you park, ranging from $5 to $20. Handicapped parking will be made available but no shuttles will run that weekend.

Last year, we had over 3,000 attendees. I just checked the pre-regs and there are currently over 1,500 people who pre-registered *paid early*. We usually take that figure and multiply it by 2.5 to get an estimate on attendance. These figures are not even including the staff.

Also, this year is the first year that we have Japanese Bands who are attending.

From being on staff and entering the pre-regs, I can tell you that we have people coming in from as far as California.

Just got over my After-Con Zombification. WOO! We coined some new terms and had a lot fun overall. Even with the added stress of the bands, I think we did alright.

RMELIFER was able to make it on Friday for some picture taking *since you really only need a badge to enter the rooms*. However, when I got the initial "I'm Here" text message, I heard over the headset that our registration lines had collapsed on themselves.

I personally had an absolute blast. I didn't take any pictures, but as the Nekocon pictures start getting uploaded, I'll be picking out the ones of myself (and Langlen) and posting them to my Nekocon 2008 Album that I made public.

November 20 has a Beatles tribute band - seems a really good one (there were on WHRO during their fundraising time). Rain will play at CNU November 20. Taking the whole family.

The Lights at the Beach have started! Hurray for greed pushing the whole "wait until after thanksgiving" thing...........

Soo.. on Saturday, there's the 2008 Grand Illumination Parade on Waterside Drive in Norfolk. Don't worry about sleeping late, as it's not until 7pm.

The santas are starting to come out! Head over to the Peninsula Towne Center on Saturday between 12 and 4pm to meet one.

Because next week is Thanksgiving, there's not much in terms of events. Events should start picking up in December for the holidays.

All this weekend, head either to the Kohl's Parking Lot at Pembroke Mall (Virginia Beach) or the Kohl's Parking Lot at Jefferson Commons in Newport News for the 12th Annual "Mayflower Marathon" Thanksgiving Food Drive. Because of the support for this food drive, the winners of The Best Morning Radio Show in Virginia (Tommy and Rumble of FM99) will be broadcasting this entire weekend!
