We have relocated here and would up in Virginia Beach and since we have moved here every activity my children are involved in is in Norfolk/Ghent area. I would like to look at moving closer to that area, but do not think I can find the housing that will fit our needs. We are looking for a 4 bedroom in the 300's. I realize Ghent would be the closest, but I do not think we can afford a 4 bedroom in the Ghent area. I am thinking Chesapeake or Suffolk might be the option. I drive to the Ghent area every day at around 5pm, so what would be the easiest commute Suffolk or Chesapeake? We are either going to try and find a piece of property and build or a neighborhood with a little bit of space between the houses
I also forgot to mention my husband works in the NE corner(Harbour View area) of Suffolk. Any and all opinions are welcome!![]() Last edited by whyunpack; 04-08-2008 at 08:33 AM. Reason: forgot something |

Having been in the area all my life, and having lived in Suffolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, and Virginia Beach, and having done a lot of commuting between the cities, I try to avoid the tunnels at rush hour. If you have to go to Ghent in the afternoon, and your husband goes to Suffolk in the morning, Chesapeake (like the Greenbrier area) would be a good central location. Neither of you would have to take the tunnel, and the interstate going in your direction would not be bad. The last leg of your commute, from 264 would be the same as it is now, and you have several exit options if it is backed up. Of course, if you want to save on gas, Ghent OR Suffolk/Western Branch/Churchland would mean only one of you would have to do a lot of driving, but it would include a trip through one of the tunnels. The evening drive from Harbour View/WB/Churchland to Ghent would be the easier than a daily commute from Ghent to the other side, and, your return trip, being later in the evening, should not be bad. And you're right about the price of homes: Currently, the least expensive 4BR in Ghent is 399K.

I live in Sawyers Mill and commute to NE Suffolk (College Blvd / Harbour View area) with little to no problems. Getting to Ghent during that time of day from where I live is easy as you would be going against the rush-hour traffic.
The home I live in is on the market (5bed/3.5ba) in the upper 300's. I could send more info if you are interested. |

whyunpack,
DM sent your way. It has 3 links (2 with home info and 1 with Sawyers Mill info) and info on an open house this weekend. Ginzu |
