My husband and I are moving to the Hampton Roads area in August for a year while he completes his internship at the VA hospital in Hampton. We currently live in Atlanta....I thought rent was expensive here, but boy was I wrong! Hampton Roads is sooooo much more expensive. I am already starting to freak out because I am trying to find something at $1000 or less in the Ghent area that allows dogs. Apparently I am asking for the impossible - especially when it comes to the 'dog' part. So, two questions for you guys: #1, is the commute from the Ghent area to Hampton really hellish for an 8 am-4 pm job? I have heard it is a nightmare....but Ghent is the only place we really want to be if at all possible. And #2, any suggestions of any real estate companies that manage rentals and allow dogs? I am not receiving responses from my queries to Craigslist ads, and my phone calls about some listings in the Pilot are going unreturned. !!! Please excuse the babbling, I am just worried already. :/

I think, unfortunately, you are expecting too much with wanting to get in under 1k and with a dog...in Ghent!

Its hard to get rent for theat amount anywhere in Hampton Roads. I lucked out and am at 700, also giving the landlord 20 for water, so 720.

It is really more than I can afford, but there is nothing else! He allows pets, as well. So, I have my 2 cats.

I would find a realtor that deals with rentals. Or a rental company. Craigslist and the Pilot I am thinking are going to be hit or miss.

Good luck to you!!!

Cinderobyn is right, around here you are asking too much in a rental. Thing is, we're chocked full of Military - which raises the rents. These companies know how much the military makes and how much "extra" they can get. Plus you have the added fanfare that goes along with Ghent: Extreme prices.

And yes, going from Norfolk to Hampton during Rush Hour is a bad bad bad bad idea. Can't stress that enough. On good days, the backup is only 30 minutes.... Going across that bridge tunnel is a terror - and I can't stress that enough!

It's a nice area.

Almost all property management companies will not allow dogs due to the liability. unless it is a small dog, they make an exception with a pet deposit. Ghent to Hampton every day would be in my top 2 commutes I would not like to make. I will look in Ghent and see if I can find anything for you/

Ghent to Hampton is crazy. Try looking for the more urban feel of Ghent on the peninsula, you won't find anything as nice but some options could be Oyster Point/Port Warwick, CNU area, Hilton Village, and downtown Hampton.

Thanks everyone, so much. I'm not surprised by any of the responses, I pretty much figured I was asking too much!

I'm still in shock at the cost compared to Atlanta, and I am going to miss my bohemian, walkable neighborhood.

I will check out the areas suggested. Thanks to all!

Default Re:Moving to the area in August - help!

I moved to Ghent several years ago and currently pay $825 for a small 2 bedroom with w/d hookups that allows pets. The deals are occasionally here, but one has to be diligent in looking for them... they get snapped up fast. I found mine on Craigslist, but probably the best way to find them is by driving around and looking for the for rent signs which doesn't help if you're in Atlanta.

Ghent is wonderful, and I can't really think of any other area that is similar.

As far as the tunnel goes, well I've did that commute a few years back, and you just have to get in line for the tunnel, turn up the music, enjoy the view of the bay Coming from Atlanta, rush hour traffic can't be real news to you.

Maybe try working with a property manager would do the trick. Good luck!

I did the Ghent to VAMC Hampton commute about 4 years ago, it wasn't anything to complain about if you didn't leave at the peak of rush hour. I had to be at work between 6:30 and 7, there was rarely even a slowdown except during unusual circumstances like snow, accidents, etc. Coming home was a little worse, but the VA is pratically on top of the tunnel so there isn't much highway to sit on before you are through the tunnel. Still, even with no traffic its not exactly around the corner. I'm not sure if things have changed much since then though, when I've come back to the visit the area traffic seems worse than I remember.

I agree that Ghent is really nice and unique in the area, but don't live somewhere you can't afford.
