Has anyone visited and/or lived in both of these places long enough to compare them? If not, you can tell me your experience living in Virginia Beach, too.
I am relocating to either Virginia Beach, VA or Charlotte, NC. I have visited Charlotte once before, I was there for 1 week and really enjoyed it's charm. I have never been to Virginia Beach, but I am a California native so I love the beach.

Please give me your honest opinions about either of these two places. Thank you.
Info - I am in my late 20s, job is not an issue as I work from home.
I am wanting to live in an area that is clean, has a variety of good restaurants, has a decent nightlife, some good shopping areas. That's about it! Anything else is a bonus.

If you’re a woman, VA Beach all the way. If you’re a man, Charlotte.

Charlotte is a larger city and a larger metropolitan area. Short answer is that there are an additional 700,000 people in Charlotte metro than there are in Hampton Roads. Plus Virginia Beach is just shorthand for an area that is 7 cities and nearby counties.

Everything else is subjective. Visit Virginia Beach and check us out.

Well, Virginia Beach does have a beach but it's crammed full with hotels. I don't know how easy it is for a resident to get to go to the beach.

There are hardly any decent restaurants, just a lot of chains.

And it's strip malls everywhere. And traffic.

But I've never been to Charlotte. I'd live around Williamsburg if i had to live anywhere near Virginia Beach, but that's just me. I like some culture and things to do.

It isn't hard to go to the beach if you have a car. If you take the bus it could take a while though.

Really?? Have you ever been here? I am from New England and have lived in both Charlotte and Va Beach. Charlotte is growing much more quickly, however there is "beach" EVERYWHERE in Va Beach. I was just on a 10,000 acre freshwater reservoir fishing today less than 1/4 mile from the bay (Chix Beach). There is Sandbridge beach (15th or 20th best in the nation I just saw somewhere) and the Outer Banks less than 60 minutes away. North End beaches are great. I'll admit that the oceanfront in the summer is... well meh. I live on a lake and fish on two others (Stumpy Lake with its South Carolina-like Cypress trees growing in the water).

Schools are better in Va Beach, weather is similar, COLA is equivalent, economy is good in both areas. No pro teams in Va Beach or Hampton Roads.

There are a good number of "decent restaurants" in Virginia Beach; most of them just happen to be hiding in the strip malls!
