Who would eat the fish? No, actually we have been working the wetlands people and our little lake is doing very well this summer. Big Mouth Bass, Catfish, Sunnies, carp, and we had an odd ancient fish/eel thing. We have turtles, crayfish and on a rare occasion some nice frogs. Our gardens have over 10 species of butterflies, and the hummingbirds are here all the time. In addition, we have watched the growth of 5 species of duck, geese, heron, swift as the trees grow and gardens flourish. My smallish town house yard supports tomatoes, peas, corn, beans, melons, herbs of all sorts, onion, flowers, peppers, lettuce, strawberries, blueberries and rasperries. Granted we do not have a lawn, but as we lived in Las Vegas for years and learned the ecological damage lawns do, we have only the lawn required by the HOA. Rather than looking at the negatives of the little lakes, we took a moment to clean them up and continue to work to make them as productive as possible.

Default not sure either...

i'm wondering the same thing... how people survive in that area! i'm checking out apartment listings and they are expensive!!!! i pay less and get a bigger place being just outside philly. and it doesn't seem like there are the jobs in va to back up the high prices... at least philly, nj, ny can all back up the costs with offering lots of jobs... not so much down there getting a bit worried about moving down there... i'll make less money (if i find a job), have a smaller place, and pay more.

That's very true, and you'd also be living in a place that makes the humidity in the Philadelphia area seem rather tame. From mid May till mid September you need to run the AC around the clock. But winters in VB are about 5 to as much as 10 degrees warmer than Philadelphia, so you'd probably save on heating bills.

I just sent you a direct message. I am not sure where you have been looking for apartments, but it is cheaper in the Hampton Roads area than the northeast.

Pensions - Tax Hells

Five states are particularly tough on retirees. Not only do they fully tax most pensions and other retirement income, but most of them also have fairly high top tax brackets.

5 Toughest States for Pensions
California
Connecticut
Nebraska
Rhode Island
Vermont

Social Security Benefits - Hells

The remaining 14 states tax Social Security benefits to some extent.

14 Tax Hells
Colorado, Connecticut, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont and West Virginia. (Iowa will gradually phase out its Social Security tax by 2014, starting in 2008)

Sales Taxes - Tax Hells

These five states each have a state sales tax of 7%, the highest in the nation.

5 Worst States
Indiana
Mississippi
New Jersey
Rhode Island
Tennessee

Property Taxes - Tax Hells

At the other end of the spectrum, these five states have the highest median real estate taxes. (from highest to lowest according to 2006 Census Bureau survey and Tax Foundation)

5 Worst States
New Jersey
New Hampshire
Connecticut
New York
Massachusetts

On the good side of things:
Social Security Benefits - Tax Heavens

36 states and the District of Columbia don't tax Social Security.

36 States That Are Heaven
Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming

Sales Taxes - Tax Heavens

These five states have no state sales taxes.

Top 5 States
Alaska
Delaware
Montana
New Hampshire
Oregon

Property Taxes - Tax Heavens

Based on data from a 2006 Census Bureau survey and Tax Foundation calculations these are the five states with the lowest median real estate taxes.

5 Best States for Property Taxes
Louisiana
Alabama
West Virginia
Mississippi
Arkansas

States With No Income Tax

Don't assume that a state with no income tax qualifies as a tax haven. High sales and property taxes can more than offset the absence of an income tax.

7 States With No Income Tax
Alaska
Florida
Nevada
South Dakota
Texas
Washington
Wyoming

As I have said in other posts, it's very simple. Why are people willing to pay to live here . . . because it's a pretty nice place. I can't understand everyone who complains about traffic, living expenses, etc all the time. Move! Please leave me and everyone who is happy here alone.

I have lots of experience with Wilmington and Philly. Lots of jobs, but for my friends there is nothing about the area that attracts them. Not that it is a bad place, it's just not as nice as some others (like HR to many).

This is a forum to ALL. So why not let people express there feelings.. good bad or ugly. That's what a forum is for.. So people can give there OWN
opinion.

I have to agree with the other poster. I don't know how people survive here and make ends meet. We were lucky we bought our home years back. But, I totally agree RE: cost of living, traffic, overcrowding and same strip Malls on every corner.

This is NOT meant to offend anyone. I'm just stating my opinion.
