To all that will help,
I have lived in several states(NY, CA, FL, NC) and would like some information about Virginia(Norfolk) ! My favorite place was Raleigh, NC. Unfortunately I am unable to get a transfer back there. I am definitely a Northern guy, I was born and raised in NY. I would like to know how people react to (yankees). Raleigh had a huge NY influence and still had the southern hospitality that I love. Most of my family resides in Raleigh and has for some time. What I am saying is I don't want to be persecuted for the way I talk or teams I adore. I am married and have two young boys, so I am doing this for them. I want to put them in a good school system. I can't afford NJ and I am renting, even with the recent real estate market crash. The major reason I want to move is to be closer to my family and actually afford a home. The average home price here is around 500k, and taxes b/t 8-12k. This puts me out of almost any place in NJ, that has a good school system or nice area. I like to know if there are transplanted people from up north in the Norfolk-Chesapeake area. How much are the taxes in good areas and will I be able to find a newer home b/t 350-420? I mean no disrespect toward Southerners I just don't want to stick out. Raleigh was great, it had culture , diversity and large influence from the North. What I'm saying is that I want the best of both places. I would appreciate any help.
Thanks,
Mike

How well do you tan (just kidding)? Most of the folks around here ARE transplanted. Many are retired military and military personnel who, after serving have stayed here to live and work.

In my opinion Norfolk isnt really "Southern", and being a yankee wont be anything special here. Raleigh is definetly a southern city, cant say the same for Norfolk. There are many people from NY here so for the most part your just one amongst many. You wont really find that Southern Hospalitity here but certainly not rude or snobbish people (for the most part)...Hampton Roads seems like a really "undefined" area when it comes to alot of things, alot is because of the strong military presence and also with us being the connection between the North and the "true" South. It's really hard to tell what to "expect".

Come on over to Williamsburg! I swear everyone I meet in Williamsburg lived up north at one point in time! Many are from NY others are from NJ. There is a bar not too far from us that the owner has a huge party once a year and all of his friends are from...NY! They all come down and go to a William and Mary game and have a huge party! Like other posts on here have said, many people are transferred to the area by way of the military, others retire down this way because it is cheaper. You will not be isolated and neither will your kids.
Good luck!

I never really had any problems but I'm from Ohio, not sure that really qualifies me as being a Yankee, lol. In fact I've heard people hate it when my kind move to New York. Seriously though I wouldn't worry about it at all. If you want the best of both worlds stick with the older cities; Norfolk, Newport News, Hampton, Portsmouth. The newer cities are a bit suburban and quite honestly, a lot of "flight" is the best way that I can say it. There are a lot of arrogant Yankees that shoot off at the mouth but I think they love it here it just isn't acceptable for them to love it because they are a Yankee, you know how that is, lol.

Stick with those older cities though. Crime is a bit of an issue but that's all relative to what you're used to. Plenty of New Yorkers here and New England as well you would be surprised. Norfolk is a nice town though, particularly downtown they're doing some interesting things there. You should be able to find a home you can still find stuff for 350k. In fact if you don't need much land or a lot of bedrooms you can actually weasel into something for like 180k, not sure how good the neighborhoods those houses are located in are but it's still out there.
