Bad place to live
My wife and I are counting the days to moving out of Hampton Roads. Very over priced and unless you are military or work for CBN, most jobs available to you are low paid jobs. This makes it very difficult to find a decent home because low pay with high living cost adds up to poverty. From the 15 years I've lived here, I cannot say there is much good here. But...if you like heavy traffic, constant construction, having the average home ranging $250,000+, aggressive drivers, and unfriendly people in general, then this is the place to move. My wife and I have masters degrees and we're living week to week right now since good paying jobs are hard to find here. I've been looking for a good paying job for the last 3 years and to no avail. I applied to jobs in Charlotte, NC and Nashville, TN and already have 5 interviews and interest. Very difficult place to try and settle down and live comfortably. I recommend northern Va. Higher paying jobs, it has regular seasons, and alot less humid. Another issue with Hampton Roads is that it really doesn't do a whole lot weather-wise. It's very hot and muggy during the summers, then, when it's snowing 20 miles north of us, it's just warm enough to rain and create alot of muddy nasty weather. The only thing that I can say possitive and I do mean only thing is the wonderful bread shop near KPC church. If you love organic bread or bread that taste like bread made from scratch, you will love this wonderful shop! It is my only place of solitude from this area. Hope this helps.

Every area has it's pros and cons.
You say VaBeach is 'expensive' but then say the average home price is 250K, that doesn't make sense to me. I have lived in Northern Virginia and currently live in New Jersey and a house for $250K would be robbery even if it was a home with one bedroom with no bathroom.
As far as high-paying jobs go, sometimes it depends on what your education is and what type of job you are looking for. Are you a music composer as your account name insinuates?
Is traffic really that bad in VaBeach? I am sure the traffic in VaBeach is worse than that in southwest Suffolk, but is traffic in Suffolk the benchmark for gauging traffic? I find it hard to swallow that you would complain about traffic in VaBeach and then recommend Northern Virginia.
I do not doubt your frustrations with the area, but I do wonder if your comments are genuinely thought out relative to those who are inquirying.

I've lived in Northern Virginia for 7 years before coming back to Hampton Roads and yes, if you read other forums as well, houses average, and I'm talking about a house that is not in a bad neighborhood are around $250,000.00. The very house we are renting now values at $262,000.00 and we've got a small little square for property and it's not the safest that's for sure. Townhouses for sale around Va Beach are around $204,000.00 and that seems to be the going rate. I've done the research and pick up renters and buyers magazines for people selling and renting here. I always know there's worst traffic other places since I've driven in New York City during 5oclock rush houre and other areas like DC and Baltimore. Va Beach, from my years of living here is still a heavy traffic zone and very tough to find jobs that pay enough to support the high property values.

Housing prices in Northern VA more than doubled over the past three years. 250k now would buy you an 800 sq ft "condo" built in the 60s or 70s with original everything.

I agree with this. My family is stationed here. Anywhere you live that has a military base, generally will not pay well as far as wages. We have 2 years left before we leave this congested area... and we are also counting the days until we get out of here. There are pluses and negatives to living here, but it also depends on what you personally want. There are things to do and see... parks, trails, museums, beach, gift shops, restuarants, waterparks, Busch Gardens, Kings Dominion, Williamsburg, Yorktown, Jamestown, malls, shopping strips, Recreational activities, bicycling, driving, festivals, churches, boating, parasailing, dolphin watching, birding, all kinds of stuff to do. Personally, I don't like the traffic, aggresive drivers, housing so close together, crowds... It all depends on what you want.

I have to disagree with alot about what you are saying about HR. But then, if you are not happy here, you should leave. It may have not been what you were looking for to begin with. As far as hot & muggy, go to the midwest, you will find the same thing or better yet, maybe the hot arid air will be better for you. Many people do move to Arizona and many go west. With the way temperatures and natural disasters have been happening, I'm sure no one has perfect weather anymore.
