Airplane noise is not something that should be a concern at all in williamsburg.

Times have changed. The commercial aircraft are not a noise issue but this area is a military ghetto. Very loud F16s etc are flown out of NN airport - not by the navy, but by a contractor to the navy, Raytheon - to play war games offshore. The navy planes they play with are out of Oceana in Virginia Beach where one crashed a few days ago taking out 42 apartments. These planes take off and return to NN twice a day and fly low and loud. The few people that hate the noise gave up objecting because the attitude around here is whatever the military wants they can have. So, if being close to the commissary is more important than loud jet noise, come on down.

Glad to hear you don't have to hear those secret planes going to The Farm. (Actually now that I think about it those probably fly north of Williamsburg anyway.)

FWIW when we were visiting there it was so quiet at night we could hear the frogs in a nearby pond from our hotel room. And birds! So many birds we wondered if Kingsmill was pumping in birdsongs from a CD. We were looking around for the hidden speakers.

You will hear and see a few helicopters at times when Camp Peary is doing exercises/ training. Just saw one flying over the Chickahominy River at 10 feet off the water

There is a helicopter about three times a week. The planes are tiny two or four seater things which add atmosphere rather than detract from anything. There are maybe a dozen a day? It depends on the season or the day of the week. Actually the restaurant at the airport is a great place for lunch.

You can't hear the jets from williamsburg, I always crane my neck like a tourist when I am in NN and they fly over.

The bug noise in the summer is very bad, though.

Bug noise? You mean crickets and locusts? If so, that's a plus in my book, I love that sound. Tell me you also have lots of lightning bugs and I will be happy indeed (even though it also means you have mosquitoes).

Locusts last year were unreal, but that's a seven year cycle I believe. Where we are the Owls screech like crazy.. They and the frogs compete to see who is loudest.
