I've heard that this is a bad area, but I've also heard that there are nice parts (the usual). So I'm looking for some input. I'm inquiring about an apartment in the 900 block High St. (just beginning, no leases in sight or anything) and want to factor the neighborhood into how excited I get or don't get about it. I looked a google's street view and it's pretty industrial, which typically means bad where I live now, but it's also clean and there aren't a lot of bars on the windows. Further down High it looked pretty nice-- restaurants and such. Anybody know about the area? Your help is much appreciated!

I live in the 600 block of High St. I've only been here about 3 weeks but some things that I have noticed down your way. There are always people hanging out on the sidewalks. Not sure if there's a bus stop down there or what but it doesn't seem like the safest spot to me. If you come down a little farther towards me it seems to get much nicer and you get into the Old Towne portion of Portsmouth. I have felt pretty safe the entire time. If you have more questions let me know and I'll try to answer them. For what it's worth, I wouldn't venture down that way walking at night. At my house I've been out numerous times at night and aside from one person telling me it's not safe to be out at night I have been fine.

I'm gonna let Sig handle that one. I travel thru there at least once a week and it may have changed over the years as far as living in that area, but I worked off High St. years ago and I wouldn't walk a pit bull thru there at night!

thanks!! that's really good to know. People out loitering isn't generally a good thing, unless it's around some nice cafe or theatre or something...street corners late at night has a bad sound. I had a feeling it might be too good to be true, alas. it does seem like it's a nice area a little further down, though. If I have more questions I'll definitely send them you way, Sig, thank you! thank you both, I appreciate it lots.
