While looking at the Chick's Beach website last week, I saw a link to a new Shore Drive website. I have a condo there, so was interested to see the new site (shoredr.com). The first page began with the sentance "Shore Drive is a very infamous road in Virginia Beach". I emailed the admistrator, explaining the meaning of the word "infamous", and suggesting that he use a different choice of words. He emailed me back, explaining that he chose that particular word because of the number of deaths on Shore Dr. He changed the page to say "very famous, as well as very infamous, which is incorrect grammer, first off (some words, such as those two, shouldn't be paired with the word very, it is already understood), plus it just sounds stupid. It's not like this is Hells Kitchen or East LA, places that I would consider infamous. Do other people consider Shore Drive to be infamous? Not an important question in the scope of things, but I was just curious.

Never really considered it infamous. It's quite a busy road and common travel plain for locals.

To the local people I guess it would be considered "infamous" due to the number of deaths that have occured on Shore Drive.....but people that are not familiar with the area probably have never heard of it. I agree though that he could have used a better choice of words to descibe the area itself..........the indroduction could use some tweaking in my opinion.

We traveled it yesterday after biking down at the waterfront most of the day..playing "tourist." It was not as busy as usual and we enjoyed the ride.

Vehicle accident deaths....there is a stretch of Shore Dr. that can be dangerous, especially if speeding and alcohol is involved. I guess that any road can be dangerous if speeding/alcohol plays a part though but for this particular area it is more prone for vehicle accidents in Hampton Roads. (Maybe the website should have specified this as well, if you are not from there then people might think it is in a crime ridden location)

The area is one of the safest as far as crime goes though....you will definitely not be in gangland! haha

Exactly. The intersection closest to us (Page/Vista Ave. & Shore Dr.) has several crosses and wreaths. 3 different restaurants let out here and I'm sure the majority of deaths are alcohol related.
Sections of Shore Dr. in Norfolk are a little scary, but the VA Beach part is probably one of the most desired locations to live.
I just think that infamous was a stupid choice of words.

Kind of silly using both famous and infamous. I am sure every busy street in the country has had folks hit by cars on it. Not to be a stickler but Shore turns into Atlantic Ave, not Pacific Ave, at 83rd St.

I have started a Shore Drive Blog that I will hopefully be posting about some of my friends' local businesses soon.

Why focus on it being famous and infamous at all? I think it's a beautiful neighborhood with nice people and a great atmosphere. I don't see the famous part at all, unless there is something I'm missing. I am the new guy here...

I agree, any great areas worth living in have people related interactions i.e., sharing the roads, drinking, non -drinking and the DUI's. I live off Shore Dr., it gets bad press when there is an accident, but it is still good real estate and virgin beaches once the tourists leave or in season by comparison to the Ocean Front.
I have a web site that is more a chatty photo blog about the best of living at the beach. Please contribute virginiabeachdaze.com. The site is not commercial, but community oriented for locals.
