I live in Franklin and work in Suffolk. You can find more affordable housing in Franklin. I found my rental home on Craigslist, and it was several hundred dollars cheaper per month than a comparable house in Suffolk -- more than enough to offset the cost of the commute. In Franklin, we do have to occasionally put up with the smell of the local paper mill. Overall, I like the area.

how is the shopping of the areas? we only have two grocery stores in the county, granted we are a small county but one is 7 min drive the other is about 20-25 min drive and they are the same. I do alot of online shopping, and we only have maybe a dozen resturants in the whole county ....4 or 5 in the area but most are pretty bad or too pricey for the quality. stuff for kids? a ymca or gym? parks or state parks?

wondering if you can fill me in on some of that as well
thanks a bunch

You would find many more shopping choices in either Suffolk or Franklin; of the two, Suffolk has the most. Suffolk is also closer to the metro Hampton Roads area. It's probably easier for me to describe what Franklin has, because we actually live there and because Suffolk will have most of these plus others.

Franklin has a super Wal-Mart, a new Farm Fresh, and a Food Lion. There is also a new Lowe's. We have most of the major fast food chains, including a new Taco Bell/KFC. There is also Applebee's, a Southern-style restaurant called Golden Skillet, a few Italian/sub sandwich places, Don Pablo's Mexican, and a few Chinese places. Franklin also has a bowling alley.

Franklin needs more parks. There is a skate park and a public pool. I don't think there are any state parks nearby. Franklin does have a YMCA. We are actually members of the Suffolk YMCA, which is larger and has more cardio equipment and more outdoor pool facilities, including a kiddie pool, Olympic pool, and splash park. The Franklin YMCA is not yet (at least that I know) a part of the Hampton Roads YMCA network; the Suffolk YMCA is. That means you can use any other HR YMCA free of charge. Some of them have different amenities, including water parks and slides.

If you have the complete address of the place in either Suffolk or Franklin, you can use this link to find the closest establishments in the area. Here's the link: Walk Score - Helping homebuyers, renters, and real estate agents find houses and apartments in great neighborhoods.. I hope this will help you.
