My husband and I used to live in VA Beach...about 3 years ago to be exact. We're now in Michigan and are considering moving back. We want to live at the beach, but MAN the home for the money is sickening...in a bad way! I've seen so many other major areas where you can get so much more home for the money. We're looking at homes between 300-400K (which I think is a pretty reasonable range for a good home) and we're finding a lot of fixer-uppers. Bummer.

So my question (finally). What is it like commuting to VB from say Chesapeake or Suffolk these days? It it horrendous as it was 3 years ago? What is happening with Mayor Obendorff (sp?). I've heard a new mayor is on the way in and that people expect some changes, a reduction in jet noise being one of them.

Any thoughts on the commute and the politics of the area?

There are plenty of decent homes in VB in your price range that aren't fixer uppers. Chesapeake is possibly a bit more inexpensive, but any commute around here can be difficult (no tunnels from Ches to VB though).

Don't give up. It is expensive here, but its worth it!

I drive from VB to Chesapeake every day and it's not bad at all. I would suggest not to buy in Oceana if you don't like Jet Noise, but inward some from there like the Lynnhaven / Bonney Road/Rosemont areas.
