My daughter just graduated from college and took a job at the shipyard in Portsmouth. Where does a young professional her age live that is safe yet convenient for work? and has social access? She is in corporate housing temporarily for 2 weeks in Olde Towne Portsmouth - while we try to make a permanent decision. How safe is this area for a young female?

If she lives in Ghent - Which is great socially, how long is the commute on a typical day?

How safe are the apt now along Granby St by Princess Anne Road - this is not really in the heart of Ghent but where alot of the new apt complexes are located?

Would you opt for an apt right in downtown norfolk so you can walk to restaurants and shops on Granby st and MacArthur Mall? How safe is this area?

I wouldn't live in Portsmouth and that is my opinion from working over there. I visit the shipyard at least twice a week and have been going thru those neighborhoods for over 23 years. As some will tell you, a young professional would probably live in Ghent and it's not but a 5 minute drive to the MID TOWN Tunnel...no downtown tunnel would be necessary. Then she is about a 10 minute drive to the shipyard.

Ghent is a good place for a recent college graduate. It is safe but can't say much for the surrounding area. I wouldn't walk around at night by myself. It is Norfolk after all.
Plenty to do around here in Ghent. Can pretty much skate or bike to lots of places. Grocery Stores, Libraries, Restaurants, Bars, Theatres, The Mall, IHOP...

By living in Norfolk, she is going against the traffic - most is coming into the city. The mid town tunnel is the least traveled of all the area tunnels.

Default Midtown Tunnel

Thank all for their replies.

So I assume the traffic is not as heavy on the midtown tunnel versus the downtown tunnel - is that correct - even though it is only one lane?

Can someone who uses the mid-town tunnel comment on how bad it actully is?

It MAY get a little heavy in the afternoon (4ish) when the downtown tunnel has a backup, but other than that, it's pretty good.
