When we are in Chesapeake, my wife and I like to go to DeVines (used to be called Mio's), which is a little place in the strip mall across the street from Greenbrier Mall. The calzones are very good. You are also within driving distance of Wood Chick's BBQ on Battlefield, the gal there even cleaned Bobby Flay's clock in a recent Throwdown.

So it's not all bad, but yeah, you live in the land of overweight families piling into their SUV's and heading out to Wal-Mart, Golden Corral and Dairy Queen, so if your tastes have become somewhat refined from living in another city, it's going to be a little tougher for you.

If you wanna drive, there is tons of great stuff in Norfolk. We live in Virginia Beach, where there is plenty of great food, though be advised to avoid Oceanfront tourist traps (mostly seafood buffets and waffle houses). The little gem down at the Oceanfront is Tautog's (200 block of 23rd), a local's in-the-know spot (there isn't even a sign out front). La Bella Italia on Laskin...Steinhilber's...One Fish, Two Fish...Primo Pizza...Daruma...Lynnhaven Fish House...Fire & Vine..Coastal Grill.....all great. If you kind of get your little list of favorites together you can be a happy camper for quite a while and never have to go anywhere near the Oceanfront tourist trap crap again.

You should try Doumar's. It is awesome and I miss it sooo much! We used to live in Norfolk and that was definitely one of my favorite places to eat. It is right off of Monticello.

For a great atmosphere and a terrific coffee try Habana Cafe on Shore Dr is a cozy little place with the best Cuban sandwich and to be honest there coffee is better than Starbucks and more affordable too.

I've found a couple places that aren't too bad; but woodchicks bbq was perhaps the worst food I've ever had in my life. They use no seasoning on the meat nor take any of the fat off before slapping it on cheap white bread along shot-glass-sized sides. Coming from eastern NC, I know good BBQ and this place should be forced to remove those letters from their name!

I'm begining to think people here think ***** food is good because that's all they have known. I am interested in any kind of food as it's good and not overpriced. So can someone please give me some sound recommendations.
I moved here from NJ and found the same thing. Places recommended that are not really good... Chesapeake Pizza for one (To a New Yorker it's like white bread with Ketchup & cheese or Chuck e Cheese's)

Let me give you a list of places I have found to have good food. We are not talking five star restaurants, just places you can go to get good food.

1. Casa DI Costanzo Pizza (Farm Fresh Strip Mall)
1464 Mount Pleasant Rd
Chesapeake, VA 23322
Excellent Italian food. Owners are from NYC and NJ

2. Warrior's Mongolian Grill
1437 Sams Dr,
Chesapeake, VA 23320
Chinese Grill cooking

3. El Gran Rodeo Mexican Restaurant
Target shopping center exit 8 rt 168
Mexican Awesome - try the chili

4. DeRican Chef
3208 Holland rd Suite 105
Virginia Beach, VA 23452
Puerto Rican cuisine - AWESOME!

5. Shiki Sushi & Hibachi
1464 Mount Pleasant Rd
Chesapeake, VA 23322
Japanese Sushi

Again, I am not talking The Four Seasons Restaurant, The Rainbow Room or The Russian Tea Room, Just casual eateries with good food!

Good luck, I'm sure there are more around but I just haven't found them yet!
