Sounds good from VAto PA, thanks!
Another question. I noticed that the Google maps says that if we drove to Corolla, we'd have to go way south and THEN north to Corolla. There is no other way to go there? It says 90 miles from VB to Corolla and only 78 from VB to Nag's Head! LOL

wjjbward, there is no other way to get to Corrolla UNLESS you want to take the ferry from NC across the sound. It is a fun trip. OR you get special permission to drive through the preserve south of Sandbridge which dumps right in Corrolla (but they don't give those out anymore as far as I know).

Shelly-I am glad that the wildlife refuges are there, though. It's just odd when you think about being so close to Corolla yet so far away. LOL Maybe if I had a boat I could get there faster...

I am glad it is there as well. I love Sandbridge and the preserve is perfect!! I think you could get there quicker by boat, LOL!!! If you are up for it, check out the ferry. You need to google North Carolina Ferry Service. It will take you from just south of Moyock across the sound close to Corolla. May take awhile, but would be a pretty adventure.

Special permits were only given to permanent full time residents who lived in that area prior to the creation of Back Bay NWR in the 1970s. Not an option for pretty much anybody nowadays - so you gotta drive the long way. As much as I'd love for that shortcut from Sandbridge it is worth keeping that area pristine.
It is a pretty interesting story if you read up on it online - basically, a bunch of developers had a vision and had all of these lots for sale in a place called Carova Beach and planned a connecting highway called the Ocean Pearl Highway all the way to VA Beach. But with the NWR in place all plans were worthless and its was abandoned. However, Carova still is there but you need 4wd to get up there...
Though they are building the Mid-currituck bridge which will greatly decrease that distance from VA Beach to Corolla, think it going to open in the next couple of years. Mixed opinions exist on that too, but thats a whole other debate...
