Default is the traffic really THAT bad???

ok, i'm reading some scary stuff about the traffic in this area....

i put in google maps from about center of chesapeake to the northern part of norfolk and got about 40 minutes.
anyone have any idea what that travel time is really like during rush hour? (traveling from chesapeake into norfolk?)

i'm leaning towards renting a place in chesapeake... but i'm guessing jobs, whatever there may be of them, would be more centered in norfolk area.... wondering how long of a commute i'd really be signing myself up for.

the beach (sandbridge beach) looks to be about a half hour away from cheseapeake... does that get backed up with traffic?

i'm taking a trip in sept. to test things out myself but the more i can narrow down before that the better

Huh? There is 7 Cities Here. Jobs are not just centered in "Norfolk" Traffic is everywhere.
If you are going through the tunnel to NN or HPT from CPK then you could theoretically encounter a back-up but it all depends on the time of day like mornings 6-9 or evenings 4-7. Otherwise you might still have traffic. No different then any other place really..

Agreed! I can get from Chesapeake to just before the Ocean front in 20 minutes til 5 pm and then it can be questionable after that.

As long as their isn't an accident on the freeway, you shouldn't run into that much traffic.

Chesapeake to Norfolk isn't that bad going down 464. Unless there is an accident like bbguy05 said....it usually isn't too congested. The only area of the rush hr. commute that might get a little busy is when you are merging over to go downtown in the a.m.....you have to watch out for the traffic coming out of the tunnel but that's if you are going into downtown Norfolk from 464. That is just my experience...

Default traffic

thank you emeraldgirl. i would expect "normal" traffic... some posts just made it sound like it'd take me 2.5 hours to go what should be 45 mins.

It all depends on what people are used to. If you live(d) in a busy metro area (NYC, Philly, DC, ect.), then you will not find the traffic to be that brutal. If you come from more of a rural surrounding, then I am sure the traffic congestion is over the top. I read in your other post that you live outside of Philly, so I do not think that you will find the traffic to be too overwelming.

Dont get discouraged by other people's posts...If you read 100 posts, you will probably get 100 opinions

The only traffic I really hit is at the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel. I HATE that place. What is it with people and tunnels? You HAVE to go through it, so stop slowing down to 5 mph. Anyway, I take the MMMBT now if I need to go toward Newport News and all is well.
