Personally, I wouldn't live anywhere else. I travel all over the world, been to some real S*** holes, large cities where no one cares about anything but themselves, litter all over the place, neighborhoods where you'd have to carry a conceiled weapon for self defense and small cities where most of the population is either dirt poor or so rich, they'd prefer not to deal with anyone outside of their circle.
Here, if you can't mix in, it's your own fault. If you find it to be boring, you lack adventure. There is alot to do here, many social groups to get involved in and it doesn't cost you an arm and a leg. I find the Virginia State Fair to be the best on this side of the country. Beaches where you can relax and read all day in seclusion or if you need people around you, you can move down further where there is a population of people for your entertainment. Many malls with variations of stores, many Walmarts to fit your financial needs (some towns I've been to only have a Walmart). We have real butcher shops if you do not care for grocery store meats (and the prices). Versatility of Outer Banks just an hour or so away, the mountains four hours away. Seems to me that boredom is a self inflicted wound that will never heal for those who can never be happy unless they are catered to.

3. People here drive way too slow. Most of the time when there is a green light people don't drive, they just stop and look at the light. Green light means GO, not stop.
4. I don't like the school system here either. That's why my parents took me out of public schools.
I'm sure some people will agree with me and there are some people who love Hampton Roads. My reasons are just my opinion.

1. There may not be much that suits you but there are things to do.
2. Come to Northern VA and i'll show you some people that really suck and are stuck up.
3. People here in Northern VA and Maryland drive way too fast and reckless. I'll take slow HR drivers anyday.
4. Virginia Beach is actually one of the best school systems serving cities over 400k residents. Virginia is also one of the top states in education and contrary to popular belief it isnt Northern VA doing all the lifting.

Hey with regards to towing, look up the laws.
The prop management people where I live, all the signs they have up do not meet the city code for Norfolk. Heck one of the signs says you will be towed if you park near the spot, it's print that is perhaps 1/2" high on white paper laminated, on a pole that is easily obscured.
The bigger signs fail to say who is responsible for the parking lot. Once a car is towed, everyone denies responsibility. It's funny but sad at the same time. But it makes it clear why the city rules say that managing person for the lot's name has to be on the sign. They don't have that listed, in our case.
My car got towed from our lot, and dragged to the ghetto. I was mad. Now I totally laugh everytime a repo guy or tow truck driver gets shot and killed. There was a repo guy crushed by a car he was trying to repo, that is too funny. Unfortunately the websites turned off comments about the article.
If you really hate them, you should vandalize the signs and such. Stop talking about it on forums and cost them money.

Why would you laugh when a repo guy or tow driver gets crushed or killed? Kind of sick really. They are like everyone else trying to make a living. Don't shoot the messenger as they say.

I can only hope you are trying to make a joke and failing at it badly. Any sympathy I have ever had for your point of view is fading fast when I read comments like this.

Wow I like the way you put it for Va Beach not to sound boring. Maybe for you is not boring because you are from here. However my friends that I have from other states would concur with me in that the Hampton Roads is very boring. Moreover, the people from here do not care as well. People here are fake. At least in NYC people are real. Everybody says hi to one another because it is the custom, not because they want to say hi to everyone. Also many people would say "Hi How are you" just because it is required, to make the customer come back again. So you were saying people care here? .... I don't think so. People here are fake. They say Hi to everyoone just to say it not because they mean to. At least up North people will not say hi to you if they are vexed. Meaning that they will show how they are truly feeling. So....

I like your description! I completely agree with your point about boredom too. I lived in Orange County, California (supposedly the funnest place on the west coast) and yet I was bored and depressed at many times.
And yet I've had fun in rainy and dreary seattle too. Its just what you look for and what you do with your spare time that causes whether or not you get bored. Not 100% but a lot of it.
I mean on the other hand it would be pretty hard to NOT get bored in greenland or some place like that. But Hampton Roads seems to have everything you could ask for to stay active and happy. I think the only thing more you could really ask for would be a Disneyland or Six Flags theme park...but I guess there's Six Flags near DC right? so that might just have to be a 2 day excursion.
I'm excited thinking about moving back east. Hampton Roads is at the top of my list at the moment. Possible Charleston SC, but I think Hampton seems more my speed. It cools down a bit more in the winter which I think would be welcome after the hot and humid summers. And just seems like a peaceful and laid back place despite being a 2 million people metro area.

Well if you think it's HR is boring and can't find anything to do, obviously your friends arent going to think any different. Nycricanpapi, it seems (from reading your posts) that you need to go out and meet and some people that have your same interest. One of my good buddies (a CA transplant) used to complain HR was boring.. all the time. After I showed him around to some of the comedy clubs, night clubs, places to relax in the day and showed him how close we are to DC, Philly, Altantic City and Myrtle Beach (and that you dont have to confine yourself to Va Beach) he has a way different outlook on this area.
