Hampton Roads-Born and raised (Virginia Beach).

Things I don't like about Hampton Roads:

1) Traffic. No doubt number one on everyones list. I've seen worse, but it gets really aggravating sitting in the same traffic every single day. You know its a problem when you sit on the on ramp for 20 minutes.

2) Myra Orberndorf. Good Lord, shes been the mayor of Va Beach since Va Beach was founded. I think its someone elses turn.

3) and the fact that people here all seem to have some kind of chip on their shoulder.

How about sitting two hours just to get through the tunnel Hampton to Norfolk for no reason at all. No accident, flat tire, somebody on the side of the road doing a dance. I mean something! At least give me something after sitting in traffic for two hours!

What gets me is that there is heavy traffic all the time! Theres only one or two hours on a weekday when traffic isnt as bad. I have practices at 5pm and i leave an hour before so i can ALMOST not be late. The place i practice at is only 10 minutes from my house. I think the area has more people than the roads can handle, and the cities cant keep up with the population growth. Raleigh, NC is WAY WAY worse growth-wise

It's interesting that the military location keeps being brought up as a component of the driving. I haven't moved to HR yet (next month), but I've lived in several major cities (Philadelphia, DC, Honolulu) as well as overseas, and if anything I've found that being in the military seems to make a lot of drivers more adaptable to the style they find themselves in. I'm sure there are exceptions to the rule, but one has to learn how to drive like a Bostonian or drive like a German (if only the whole world did) when one lives there.

For those of you who have spent time in Atlanta, you'll notice that fast does not necessarily mean rude or reckless. And I'll never stop mourning driving in Germany--fast and very skilled was the expectation, and everyone lived up to it.

Not letting people in--particularly the whole 'speeding up when I see your turn signal on'--is simply rudeness. There's no way to sugarcoat that in a way that seems like defensive driving. It's simply rude. I lived with it for years in DC/NoVa and really hope I don't see it in the same way when we get to Hampton. If the Germans can show courtesy and consideration while traveling at 200kph on the Autobahn, there's no legitimate reason why we can't stateside.

I dont even use my blinker, and i learned at an early age that when you use it (more so the highway) you'll be waiting in the same lane for so long that you finally realize you missed your exit.

It's almost like "Drive aggressively liek you dont care if you cause a wreck"

DRIVE OR BE DRIVEN ON!

TeacherAmy-
I agree 100%!!! I grew up in Atlanta and that is where I learned how to drive. There is such a difference between Hampton Roads and Atlanta. I also lived in K-town Germany and again, what a difference. I will say that a huge variable is that in those two places, most drivers understand that the left hand lane(s) are the fast lane(s). It doesn't matter what the speed limit is, there is a courtesy that comes with driving and if someone else wants to go 90 mph down 85 then by all means, let them pass and get out of their way! And most locals....MOST, not all, in Atlanta and in Germany abide by this rule of thumb. As a matter of fact, when I received my license in Germany, they told us that most of the accidents that occurred were due to drivers from the States that did not know how to drive at a high speed with proper courtesy to other drivers (getting out of other driver's way).
Anyway, I agree with you on this one!

Default Corrupt Cops

Hello,

I am in need of assistance. I have a situation with a family
member who is being targeted by a police officer.
They live in Virginia Beach Virginia and he has been trying
to plant evidence on her and make it seem like she is involved
in illegal activity. He has done numerous things, like have
people come to her home in the middle of the night and act as
if they are putting something in her trash can. I guess to
appear as if they are making some sort of drug drop.
Also she is under surveillance, as an unmarked car remains
parked outside of her home. She is a single mother of 3 and
has no police record what so ever. Her phones are tapped and
so is her home. The officer lives next door to her and this
is how he is doing all of this. We have no idea why and are
lost about what to do. Can you advice me of what steps we
should take?

California is a freakin' hayday on the roads and I can assure you, driving here is a picnic comparied to driving out there.
When it comes to courtesy ,it's pretty much hit or miss everywhere these days..
