Default Newbie Here :)

New guy here just taking a minute to say hello to everyone. I'm a 31 y/o "computer engineer", just moved to the area (Chesapeake) officially as of the beginning of June from California with the new wife & neither of us knows anyone out here or much about the area.

I stumbled on this place & thought it would be a great place to meet people & ask questions about the area. We're looking to buy a home in the next few months so I'm sure I'll have tons of questions about that as well. Can anyone recommend a good real estate agent? Hope everyone is well!

We're a bit different than California, but you'll enjoy the slow pace that everyone else complains about! Welcome!

Personally? Anyone but Re/Max. And if you HAVE to use Re/Max, stay on them like white on rice. Call 5 times a day if you have to. If not, you will have your future home sold out from under or because the agent "forgot" that you were viewing first in a "First come, first serve" situation. Every agent I've dealt with from the Virginia Beach and Chesapeake Re/Max offices has been nothing but money hungry and will sell a place to the person with the deepest pockets. Ya know, forget all that BS they feed you in the commercials.

As far as finding a house, you might want to check out MLS listings. You can get a good search at REALTOR.com - Real Estate Listings & Homes For Sale. Also, drive through the neighborhood at night on a weekend. I do my drives around 11:30 Saturday. I've dodged alot of seedy places by doing it.

From one outsider to another, welcome to Hampton Roads. Enjoy your stay and don't break while entering the tunnels.

Welcome to Hampton Roads!

We moved here in 2005 from just over the Mason Dixon Line in PA. Our Realtor/buyer's agent was Pat Copley with the Prudential Decker office here in VB. She was such a huge help! We were very stressed out with our move b/c we sold our house in PA and moved to VB all in the span of 2 months b/c of my husband's work transfer. Pat made us very much at ease and helped us find a terrific house we could afford during the housing boom.

I hugged her after we settled on our new house here. I was so indebted to her that I got a little filled up. I just can't explain in words how much of a help she was!

I love Prudential Decker as well. I used an agent to sell my house and the same one to purchase. Tonya Thomson was awesome and became a good friend. When we were looking at a good flooring company for the hardwood, she recommended a company that was 10 fold over the rest. Excellent workmanship and great pricing. Rose & Womble agent for the lady we purchased from was far from professional, made the woman do all kinds of stupid stuff to market the house and IMO made her spend un-necessary money.

Paula Gregory at William E Wood (Shore Drive) is by far one of the nicest, mosr professional, ehtical realots I have met - I have personally used her in both the sale of my home and the purchase and would use no other. She knows both Virginia Beach and Chesapeake markets inside and out.

Best of luck to you!

Welcome to the area! My family just recently moved here too.

I would recommend Joy Bonney with Keller Williams. We were referred to her from our realtor in New Hampshire. Even though we weren't planning on buying, she answered all of our questions and was really helpful and understanding.

Best of luck!

A lot of people are moving in now, it seems, and there are a lot of nice places going on the market. If I find anything extra while I look for my new place, I'll be sure to post something here for you guys. Also, remember me if you find a place you like but don't want. Can use all the help I can get!

Don't forget to lok at the For Sale By Owner magazine. They're free at most supermarkets. Save you 6 or 7% on a sale. My last two sales and purchases were FSBO. Seamless and painless.
